Suddenly a growling voice boomed over the intercom, “Everyone it’s time to start.” The employees were startled, the tone of his voice sent chills down their spine. They didn’t recognize the voice, but soon after they realized it was the owner, Mr. Malone. It was unlike Mr. Malone to speak with such intensity, they knew something was drastically wrong.
Silence hovered over the room, as everyone took their seats; no one was prepared for what came next. As the owner entered the room, all eyes were fixed on him. He walked at a steady pace, each step gave off an airy sound, as his black Patten leather shoes creaked and squeaked. His footsteps were heavy and daunting, as it pounded on the concrete. With hands tucked into his pockets, head hung down (making the excess skin under his chin flapped in the air) and solemnness to his face, the employees felt a knot in the pit of their stomachs; it was unsettling. It seemed like Mr. Malone walked a mile to the podium before he began to speak. He wasted no time, getting to the crux’s of the matter, he spoke with a rough voice and a sharp tone, as he blurted out that the company was in distress due to financial problems, and they were folding.
The employees were reeling from the bombshell… news, when the detonator went off… “As of today, all employees should report to the front desk, and pick up their pink slips.”
There was an instant lull; then sporadic gasps gushed out in the air: a loud exasperating voice from the audience exclaimed, WHAT…WHAT...WHAT… the heck? “Did he just say we were all fired?”
The employees were discombobulated, dumbfounded, and angry; the room erupted in frenzy as fear took over: they felt “Ferhoodled,” they didn’t know what to do.
After the meeting, tensions continued on high alert, they slowly dispersed to their respected offices to clean out their desks, before picking up their termination papers.
Madelyn, one of the workers was overcome by emotions, burst into tears, nervously shouted, “What am I going to do now?”
Madelyn seemed to be on the brinks of a nervous breakdown, she was struggling with other personal problems, and the dilemma of losing her job pushed her to the breaking point: she plummeted into a state of depression. Madelyn locked herself away in her apartment for days, shutting off all contact with friends and family. She daily lounged around in her pajamas refusing to eat or drink; her family was frantic with worry.
Madelyn’s family called for an intervention and got her to the hospital. After the medical doctor treated her physical condition, he recommended Madelyn be placed in a psychiatric hospital for further evaluation and care. She was hospitalized for a few months before she began showing signs of improvement, her recovery was slow and tedious. Eventually, Madelyn was well enough to be discharged; medications and counseling were to be her constant companion to promote wellness.
Madelyn tried to pick up the pieces of her life, but it was overwhelming and unsuccessful, she had a relapse. One day while she was at the clinic her counselor introduced her to a group of volunteers that helped support the acclimation of patients back into the world. She participated in the group and was paired with a partner, named Olivia. They had a lot in common; they hit it off right away, Madelyn felt comfortable; she needed that friendship and support away from the hospital.
One day, Olivia was engrossed in a book, and it caught Madelyn’s attention, she wondered what was so fascinating, she asked: “What’s that you reading?”
Olivia said, “The Bible-Psalms 23”
Madelyn never read a bible before, she was curious, she asked Olivia to read the Psalms aloud; she did.
Each word Olivia read seemed to tug at Madelyn’s heart, she began weeping. She took hold of the scripture like a dog to a bone; in it, she found a caretaker, a place of rest, strength, a protector, a friend, a provider, peace, comfort, and acceptance.
Olivia, “Who was this person the writer was talking about?”
She lovingly said-“JESUS.”
