Suddenly, he heard the cock crowed, heralding a new day.
"Alas! Is it too late? Will I get a second chance to revert back to the default mode?"
It was not surprising that he, a man of action, decided to do something to rebuild his fallen world.
'I'm going out to fish,’ he announced to his pals, inviting them to join him.
All night they worked but caught no fish. A stranger on the shore shouted , ‘Any fish? Try casting your nets on the other side.’ Suddenly their empty nets were filled to bursting and John knew who the guy was. 'It's Jesus! At that, Peter leapt into the water, hardly able to contain himself at the possibility of being with Jesus again.
Towing the net full of fish, not far from shore, they landed. Then they saw a fire of burning coals with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus called out to them, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, but even with so many the net was not torn.
As he approached Jesus, he began to reflect on what had happened recently. The memory of that day came flooding back to him like a mighty tsunami. He remembered that he had promised to stick to the Master through thick and thin. Never would I deny you! Never!' He declared cocksurely.
"Given the chance to start life again, would I respond to the Rabbi differently?"
Then Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish.
Suddenly, Peter heard the cock crowed, announcing the dawn of a new day. "Alas! Is it too late? Will I get a second chance to get back to the default mode
When they had finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ ‘
Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’
'Take care of the young believers.’
Again Jesus asked, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
‘Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.’
'Take care of my Church.’
The third time he asked him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
Peter was wounded because Jesus asked him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’
‘Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.’
'Nourish their souls, protect them from false teachers, and lead them to maturity.'
These were not words of reproach or disappointment, but an opportunity to reaffirm his love. Could anything be more serious than an outright denial? Let me join Peter in discovering Jesus' generous love.
