Manoeuvring my wife, in her wheelchair nowadays ,has certainly broadened my shoulders and strengthened my character. Yesterday I stayed indefatigable! From 6.30am till 12 midnight, I was actively engaged: getting ready for work, grooming students, taking care of my wife, and meeting my younger daughter's needs.
I had already taught three different groups of students during the morning at 8, at 11.30, and from 2 to 4 in the afternoon. To sort out their needs, I spent four and a half hours coaching them. This was done by explaining concepts and clarifying issues. Besides, I answered their queries.
While I was thinking of a well-deserved break, a call from my wife's rehabilitation center intruded on me. The driver told me abruptly.
"Can you come downstairs to fetch your wife in 5 minutes?"
"Sorry, I'm on the bus now. Please give me another 5 minutes." I protested mildly.
When I arrived, I apologised to them for being late. Before I wheeled off my wife, my mobile rang again.
"Dad, I still have the nasty stiff neck. The cream you bought doesn't work at all! Do you mind getting me some strong pain killers? I need to stop the pain- tomorrow my test involves moving a patient. "
As I was listening to her patiently, I was thinking about how to get those pain killers. Shortly, she added.
"By the way, Dad, can you get me a pillow that won't hurt my neck?"
"Ok, darling, don't worry. I'll get one for you."
Away from the lift, I wheeled my wife towards the subway station- it took a good 15 minutes to reach there on foot.
Transferring from lift to lift, we finally arrived at the station where a huge shopping mall sat prominently nearby.
I managed to locate the drug store after picking our way through the mall. We often had to look for the right lift to the right floor. The experience was like being entangled in a maze of shops. Having consulted the pharmacist, I purchased the drugs and some much stronger cream.
At a supermarket, I spotted some pillows selling at an attractive price so I sought my wife's advice. After feeling it, she replied that she couldn't judge its suitability. A salesgirl directed me to her colleague at the bedding section. After a product's presentation, I decided on a pillow that would support my daughter's neck without giving her any ache.
It was quite a hassle moving about in unfamiliar subway stations. Only had we navigated for a while, did we manage to find our way home. Suddenly, my phone chimed. It was an SMS from my daughter.
"Dad, can u buy me dinner? I'm otw home!"
"Sorry, we r home now. Can u buy dinner yourself?"
"No worries! "
Before we had a breather at the living room, my wife insisted on visiting the washroom. On the way there, I was interrupted by my ringing house phone.
"Hi! This is Josh speaking. "
"Do you mind signing the form again ?"
"Sorry, can you wait at my door? I am attending to my wife."
It was about midnight when I took my shower. Phew, what a long day! Unexpectedly, a faint voice called out in the dark.
"Dad! Can you pray for my stiff neck, please?"
As I sauntered to her room, I found myself muttering," I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
