But in order for us to have all these amazing memories there were sacrifices that had to be made early on. I had to make a decision which was more important, my family or my career? I had spent ten years in the computer field, and worked my way into management, even without a college degree. But all I did was work. I knew I was not spending the time with my family that they wanted and deserved. Then one day, God showed me there was more to life than working all the time. But, if I was ever going to be the husband and father I needed to be, I would have to do things His way.
So, I took a leap of faith and told the Lord, You lead and I will follow. His way led me in a completely unexpected direction, and I basically started my career over from scratch. Yep! Ten years wasted, as some people may think; but looking back on it now, and all of the amazing memories I have to cherish, I absolutely have no regrets. Would I be wealthier today had I stayed that course? I’m sure I would be, but what good would all that money do me, when I am an old man and I need a fond memory to hold on to.
So what did me leaving my computer career behind cost me? Let’s see, God first provided a way for me to realize my dream of going to college. I was offered a ministerial scholarship; which also allowed my wife to take 6 free hours per semester. Boy, we were a site for those 4 years with all six of us in school. But it was a special time for us, as our children were able to watch their parents trusting in God, and realizing their dreams. I went on and earned my bachelor’s degree in Christian Studies & Philosophy from Mississippi College; and not only did I graduate, but I had a 3.34 GPA overall and a 3.5 GPA in my major. But my sweetie still beat me; she graduated Cum Laude with a 3.5 GPA. During this time I was also licensed and ordained to the Gospel Ministry, and have served as a bi-vocation minister since college, and even do a little supply preaching on occasion. The biggest lesson I learned was to Trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding; in all my ways submit to him, and he did make my path straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6). Finally, after college I started an amazing career in the Recruiting & Staffing industry, and have been doing this for almost 17 years now.
Those are just some of the highlights, but believe me, when I decided to do things God’s way, EVERYTHING changed for the better. My wife finally got the husband she needed and deserved. My children got a father, who would be there ANY time they had a need. And most important of all, I developed a life-long relationship with the Lord, which has certainly benefited me these last 5+ years, with the loss of our son, and now with my wife’s battle with cancer. Psalm 37:23 says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” I know my life has certainly been one that has brought me great joy, and I have so many wonderful memories as a result. If I can leave you with just one piece of advice; trust, trust, trust! We serve an amazing God, who wants nothing but the best for His children; and when we take that leap of faith to do things His way, it allows us to have an amazing life, that will leave us with spectacular memories that will last a lifetime.
