After taking their order, the waiter scratched his head, wondering if the man he just served was the famous pastor who he saw on the news.
The waiter put the plate on the man's side of the table. "Excuse me sir, but aren't you the pastor who was on the news, when you wrote Governor Nelson about how Christians use religion as a crutch?
"Yes, I was." Bob smiled.
"It's so good to meet you." The waiter shook his hand and walked away.
Bob speared a piece of meat. "Jan, I love you." She leaned forward as he lifted the fork up to her mouth. She cupped her hand under the fork to prevent it from dripping on her dress.
"Honey, I love you too." She batted her eyes.
Bob kissed her on the cheek. " I cant wait to get back from the mission’s conference in Africa. We'll have to go out for dinner again."
***********
A few weeks later, after returning from Africa, Pastor Bob walked into the baggage claim scanning the belt when he saw a familiar face. Tim, the Chairman of the Board of Elders ran up to him.
"Pastor, we're having an emergency meeting back at the church. We need you to get there as soon as possible."
The conference room became silent as they walked in. Five other men were waiting, sweat broke out on Pastor's forehead as he started to tremble while seating himself.
Tim's jaw tightened up. "Pastor, you have been seen at various restaurants in town with a blonde woman. Would you care to explain?"
"What blonde woman?"
"You were seen with a blonde woman at the Chase Park."
Pastor's jaw dropped open. "I still don’t know what you’re talking about."
Tim stared at Bob for a moment. "On a different occasion, Steve saw you at the Old Mill; tell him Steve."
Steve pointed his finger at the pastor. "I saw you there, Pastor Bob; you can't deny it."
Everyone's eyes turned back to Tim. "Pastor, I’m friends with the editor of the Dispatch. Their gossip writer is going to include a story in the paper about your affair. This will tarnish the image of the church. We need you to resign."
Pastor hung his head and refused to look at anyone. "Okay, I confess I've been seeing another woman. I don't know what else to say. I've been stressed out about the move to the new building."
Tim opened the employee handbook. "Sorry, as Chairman of the Board of Elders, I have to inform you that you can’t be the pastor of this church anymore."
Pastor rolled his eyes. "A former US president had an affair. He didn't step down. Why do I have to?"
Tim took a deep breath. "You committed adultery. Bob you perfectly know well that's a sin. You’ve been a well-known pastor in this community for 20 years. We appreciate your dedication to this congregation so we’re going to give you 24 hours to step down or we’ll terminate you."
Abruptly, Pastor got up from his chair. "I'll give it some thought, but I don't understand why I have to resign my position." He stormed out and slammed the door.
*********
Pastor Bob spotted Tim at a fast-food restaurant. He felt his cheeks burning. "Tim, I went home and confessed to Joyce. After a lot of prayer, I’ve decided to resign.”
Tim pulled out a chair for him. "Pastor Bob, please have a seat. This process has not been easy for the board. As a brother in Christ, we love you and are sad to see you go. I would love to pray for you. If it‘s okay"
Both men bowed their heads and prayed.
