He never served in any branch of the military. Mr. Personality just throws around the term war stories because he, as many a veteran, is prone to share experiences repeatedly, even if listeners would prefer to opt out. As an attentive wife dutifully at his side, I’ve heard many of these tales too many times to count. He frequently embellishes details and frowns when I interrupt and try to rewrite his script. It makes my spouse uncomfortable when I correct him in public so I should curb my tongue, smile and nod at appropriate intervals. Since our move, stories from his childhood and youth have taken a decided turn.
We now live where people know many of the same stories, the people he grew up with and the lore of his old stomping ground. It puts a completely new slant on his monologue, the reactions of those listening, and my response to him and his audience. Not too long ago we were chatting and snacking during a short break in an area church meeting. The conversation somehow shifted to his old girlfriends, of whom I as an outsider knew by name only. To my amazement, his face and ears turned a beautiful shade of red.
“Sweetie, wear this red necktie; it brings out the best in you!”

I particularly enjoyed the ending...but I was wondering why he got so embarrassed? Was it because people there knew the "girls of whom he spoke?" Or, were some of them present?
It got me thinking! Nicely done. God bless~
I think my brain is on vacation because I've been having trouble "getting" the ending in several stories now. You had some words to spare and it might make your story even better if you showed some examples of his tall tales.
You did a nice job writing on topic. I enjoyed the relationship between a couple together for so many years.
My favorite line: "He could easily be mistaken for a politician rounding up votes,"
