What’s all the hype about social media? I am not into it for a series of reasons.
I fully realize that social media is the “thing” of the era. Everyone is doing it; even the e-mail providers seem to be all but demanding that there is participation in chatting and socializing. Please! I just want my e-mail, plain and simple.
But no, there it is, the invitation to change your page, personalized it to spell YOU. Invite friends and talk to the world, literally. Yes, talk to people and call them “friends” even though you do not know them and have not a clue if they have your best interest at heart. I must wonder, “What motivates the social media?”
I have a strong suspicion that it is all about marketing and money. I am not against either marketing or making money, but would they please just upfront let me know what you are doing rather than manipulating me and my world without my permission. This I consider to be the gross faultiness of the marketing sales processes.
I do see a great opportunity that social media can bring to the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus, and does at this point. But be assured that “social media moderators and control seekers” will taut the offenses of certain parts of the Gospel as “offensive.” Now that is offensive to me! Yet, IF I desire to be a part of the “group” I must not offend; but they have a right to offend, and that is acceptable? Does it not come down to the question, “How can two walk together unless they be agreed?”
I can see the goodness of meeting and enjoying people you may never otherwise know. However, I must wonder if we do not join the herd and place ourselves in the position to get roped and stalled?
I tried FB. I wrote some opinions and information there. Someone hacked into my e-mail account sending me messages from me, and what did they write on my FB? I have no idea, because when I received a notice from FB that I had posted “offensive” language, I closed it down. I also closed the e-mail account immediately. I have never returned to FB. I have not missed it, but have missed being responsive to some employment and Clergical offers because they wanted to route everyone through FB. “Send it to my FB.” “Respond through FB”
Do the benefits of the social media outweigh the possible and lurking problems? I suppose that is for each one to decide for them self. But for a society that says it cherishes “privacy” you just have to say, “What? You don’t mean that!”
