What made it even worse was the presence of Laura. Because She was under the age of Eighteen, if the group was exposed by the police all of them would also be charged with “ Indoctrinating a Minor with Dangerous Anti-Social Behavior.” The results of this crime, if they were convicted, and all of them knew they would be, would include that Laura would be taken away from Her parents and become a ward of the state, and that She would never be allowed to have any contact with them again. Also they would face several, but equality serve penalties. All of which would include a so-called psychological profile to determine if any of them could be rehabilitated At some point in the future after years of under going counseling, they would be given an opportunity to be placed on life long probation, but only if they took “ The Pledge.” This was the greatest fear of any of The Christ Followers, “ The Pledge,” was the last chance, if a Follower refused to take it they could face life in prison or even death.
The greatest fear about “ The Pledge” was not that a Christ Follower would not take it but when faced with life in prison or death that they would take it. Simply the Follower had to swear that Christ was not born of a virgin, that He had not lived a sinless life, that He was not The Only Begotten Son Of God, that The Bible is not infallible nor in fact was It even true. Last and most important that faith in Christ alone was not a means to salvation, because it was narrow-minded and excluded all other religions. Of course taking this pledge, while saving one’s physical life, meant the lost of Eternal Life, because Christ Himself had said “ That if we deny Him before men, that He would deny us before His Father.” To help Followers, who might be tempted to take the pledge, when faced with prison, or more likely death, all Followers were required to memorize two verses of Scripture which were both find in the book of Acts. The first was Acts; 4:19 “ But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Weather it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.” Followed by Acts; 5:29 “ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, we ought to obey God rather than men.” It was with these Scriptures in mind and a peace in His heart that no matter who was standing on the other side of the door, Steve turned the knob on the door.
