“It will only take a few hours to handout the canned goods,” her grandmother had said.
Sure only a few sweltering hours under the hot summer sun. Frowning she mumbled under her breath, “I definitely had to be guilt tripped to agree to this torture.”
“Excuse me Miss?” The small voice broke into her thoughts.
“I’m sorry have you been standing there for long?” Sarah asked a bit embarrassed, hoping the child hadn’t heard her.
“No, but I saw you were crying and I wanted to give you this.” As the child uncurled her small fingers Sarah noticed wrinkled little petals in the middle of the child’s palm. She felt the beginning of the first smile of the day.
“Oh honey, I wasn’t crying but you made my day.” The child quickly turned around and said, “See momma, I told you so!”
“What was that?” Sarah asked.
“Well this morning momma told me to get ready to help during the church event. Mom said to hurry but I just had to stop and pick some flowers.”
“Why?”
“God told me so!” said the little girl vehemently, as if Sara would dare to contradict her.
“Really?”
“Yes. While the grownups give out food. I handout flowers to people that look sad.”
Standing there for a few minutes there was no doubt in her mind that God had truly spoken to this child. Sarah knelt down to the child’s eye level, feeling humbled by the simple gesture. With a serious face she said, “You know what. I may be doing something important by helping give food to fill people’s tummies, but you are doing something much more important.”
“I am?” the child said in a surprised little voice.
“Most definitely, see I didn’t need food because my stomach was full, but you helped fill my heart by handing out your flowers, thank you.” As soon as Sarah said that, the child scurried away.
She straightened up, swiped her forehead with the back of her hand one more time, and with a smile on her face said, “next!”
