She studied the tree out the window. Peaceful. Not boring at all.
She could see the birds and squirrels in the branches that were the height of the third-story window she was gazing out of. The bright green leaves displayed new life. If only she were as free to climb to such heights.
She looked down at the handout, trying to make sense of it. She looked up at the teacher, trying to comprehend his meaning. She looked around at her classmates, wondering if they were as lost as her.
She looked out at the tree, understanding all she needed to know and enjoying the beautiful complexity.
She imagined the tree as a seed in the ground. Who had planted it? How long had it taken to grow? How many students had rested in it's shade, its thick trunk supporting their backs? How much oxygen had it supplied to teachers passing by? How many storms had it withstood? How many times had people gazed with wonder at its autumn leaves? How many times had it been overlooked despite its enormous size?
Jill studied the handout. Boring.
It was made from a tree. Less boring.
