Topic: Century or Centuries (02/17/11)
Your throne perched on a lofty mountain peak
A fortress dwelling on the rocky crag,
Built as a stronghold against the enemy,
Piercing, yellow eyes search the estuaries below,
Talons clutching both olive branches and arrows,
Willing to fight, until death, for liberty.

The sky is your vast kingdom
Behold your majesty as you soar higher and higher;
Downward you plunge to capture the spoils of your plunder,
Such swift descent, a reminder of our limited days on earth
Your presence leaves a lasting impression,
No other winged creation exemplifies such courage and purpose.

Faithful to your mate and native land
No matter where your journey leads,
To home you always return
Some have tried to bring you to extinction,
But nothing could extinguish your indomitable spirit,
God has reestablished your place in the heavenlies.

Arise eagles; awaken from your slumber,
Hear again, the war that rages below,
Cry out as you did during the Battle of Brandywine,
“Shriek for our freedom,” like you did over two centuries ago
Restore meaning to our symbol of freedom and strength,
Protect us, O God, under the shelter of your everlasting wings.

Your last stanza was masterful-make my hair stand up-anointed. It was a little wordy to start, but you finished with a memorable bang. Such an anointed voice; one for today. This poem gave me strength. Excellent job. I am very excited to see such anointed poets and writers sharing here. Keep working, you'll be one leading the pack one day. Outstanding entry!
