Michael could not believe it. Finally the day had come. The cool breeze that caressed his face was a direct compliment to the goodness that enveloped his heart. The wait was finally over. It felt as if the heavenly host were smiling down on him. Two more hours and he would move forward on what he had felt for an eternity. He would propose to Kenya. Kenya. Just the thought of her caused a huge grin to spread across his face. They had spent a lifetime together already. From wee little things they were the best of friends and attended summer camps, Waltrip High School, and even St. John’s University together. After much seeking, prayer, and fasting, he had got a clearance in his spirit to move forward. A green neon sign that flashed “Go get your bride”.

Their parents were best friends and their friendship was eminent. He was only one year her senior and had played the role of big brother forever. He had been careful not to move to fast. He didn’t want to frighten her. Big brothers didn’t caress the side of their sister’s face and place a wayward hair behind their ear. Neither did they gaze dreamily into their eyes and plant a soft kiss of things to come. He had exercised every ounce of self control and kept a respectful distance. They had confided in each other since he was seven. There were enough secrets between them to fill forever. No one could make his temper flare or soothe his wounded spirit like her. Kenya was the woman he wanted to spend his life with. When they met today for their routine Wednesday lunch at the Snickerson Café he would ask her. He would kneel on one knee, flip out the blue velvet box that matched those startling sky blue eyes, and say it.

“Kenya will you be my wife, the mother of my children?”

Kenya sat in her office in a stupor. How many times would she meet Michael at the Snickerson’s Café and talk about everything but what was dominating her thoughts. Marriage was on her mind. She knew that she could talk to Michael about anything. They had shared intimate things that only blood relatives dare to share. Nevertheless she was at a loss on how to broach the subject. Especially since it was so intertwined and connected to him. They had established a bond that accepted nothing less than complete honesty. She covered her face and released a low groan. How do I tell Michael that I want to be married? How do I tell him that I have finally fallen in love – with him? Kenya let that thought roll around in her head for a space. He had always treated her as a dear sister. She couldn’t recall a single instance where he crossed the line. I can’t. I refuse to let an awesome guy like Michael feel obligated to a friend. She glanced at the clock, only fifteen minutes to get there. She would be late. She grabbed her black coat and whisked toward the double glass doors.

Michael sat in their favorite booth across from the waterfall wiping the sweat from his palms. Kenya was late. Not a good sign. She was always punctual. He hoped that nothing had happened. As his trepidation peaked he spotted her. Relief flooded him only to flee again when he saw her face. He knew that look. Something was definitely wrong.

Kenya glanced at Michael from the distance. Oh no. He had that look. He was concerned about something. She had to deny her feelings and help him.
When she reached the table it was awkward. It was as if neither of them knew what to say. Hurt began to encompass her heart. Why is Michael acting so strangely? Michael felt slightly confused. He was sure the Spirit had led him to this moment.

Forbidden tears sprang from her eyes in a torrent. Michael had closed the gap between them enclosed her in a bear hug. The transformation had already taken place in his heart. This was his wife. Kenya felt the difference. This was not a brotherly hug. A whispered “I love you” escaped from her lips. The plan was back in place. Michael fell on one knee, flipped out the ring and just said it.

“Kenya, will you be my wife. The mother of my children. I love you so much.”

The kiss sealed the deal.
