She pushed herself up out of bed only to fall back again. Her vision blurred as the tears spilled out drenching her pillow. Her breath caught and she regained her composure. Trying again she swung her legs to the floor feeling as if she had two cement blocks for feet. Somehow, she was going to have to put one foot in front of the other.
The funeral began in two hours. How would she ever make it through? It had only been a month. Thirty days. But it had felt like yesterday. The plane soaring to its death, the children crying hysterically and nothing she could do to ease their fears. Except pray.
Her children would have been eleven and seven had they survived the accident. Her injuries had been severe enough that she couldn’t make any funeral arrangements until now. She forced herself out of bed and tread to the shower. A second wave gripped her and she braced herself against the sink.
She tipped her head back as much as the brace allowed. Streams of anquish flowed down her face and she cried, “Why have they been taken from me? How is it that I have been saved alone? It isn’t fair, Lord. It isn’t fair.” Her legs collapsed and she fell to her knees. Her shoulders shook as she gave into the pain that consumed her. “I can’t do this by myself. I can’t.”
She sniffed and sat still as she felt a faint stirring within her soul. A whisper across her heart that said You are not alone my child.
She hadn’t believed it at the time, but looking back, she hadn’t been alone.
Five years later she sat at their gravesites holding a hymnal in her hands. Her heart poured out the verses and tears rolled down her cheeks as she sang It Is Well With My Soul. It had been her favorite song before the accident and now it was again. When she sang this song, her heart absorbed the inner tranquility that only God could provide. And she knew He was dwelling within her.
Her feet still felt like blocks of concrete and some days were harder than others, but she had let Him consume her. And He had filled her spirit with his peace and love in the way only a father can. She was with him and He was with her. And they were One.
