“No! You’ve got to be kidding. She’s a medical doctor. What would she be doing with a guy that works in a call center?—and lives with his mother no less.”
“Daisy saw them together at the movies, and apparently they were quite cozy. Wasn’t he wanting to date you a few months ago when he first moved back?”
“Yeah, like I’m that desperate. He’s good looking for sure, but I want someone with a little more future than that.”
“Apparently, Sharon told Marcie that he is the kindest, most caring person she has ever known and she couldn’t care less where he works.”
“Well, it sounds to me like he’s looking for a sugar mamma. I suppose he’s counting on her money supporting him and his mother.”
“That’s what a lot of folks are thinking.”
“I just feel so bad for Sharon, but you’d think she’d have a little more common sense than that. Some people just have no discernment at all.”

“Did you hear the latest? Sharon and Phil are engaged.”
“Oh please, tell me you’re joking.”
“No, Sharon showed me the ring herself, and let me tell you, it is some rock.”
“Bless her heart, she probably had to pay for it herself.”
“I don’t think so.”
“Well, I don’t think they make that kind of money at the call center. Of course, his mother may have helped him out with her pension. Oh I mustn’t be mean.”
“Oh, didn’t you hear, his mother passed away. Apparently she had pancreatic cancer and that is why he moved back here in the first place. Sharon told me he is an English professor at the university, and since there was no place for him to teach here, he decided to work at the call center just to keep busy and to get ideas for a novel he is writing. The guy is loaded and brilliant—not to mention good looking. She really scored big. She is moving to the city with him after they are married and is already signed up with a big medical center up there. What a lucky girl! Too bad you didn’t give him a chance when he asked you out.”
“Well, how could anyone know that he was all that?”
“I guess Sharon figured it out. Her mother told Rose that she was so proud that her daughter had discernment enough to judge a man by his character and not to let what other people think influence her.”
