“I will wash your feet.”
“Oh no, Lord!”
Peter cried out with a shriek,
“My feet are dirty.
They stink. Lord, they reek!”
“How often, my son,
must I repeat,”
Jesus consoled,
his voice soft and sweet,
“I came to serve. I am not proud.
You know I am meek.”
“ I know. And you know so well
that I am incredibly weak.
So often I open my mouth
and without thought,I speak
not stopping first,
your guidance to seek.
Remember the time
I took that big leap
over the side of the boat
and then cried out,’eek?’
when my faith sprung a leak
and doubt started to seep deep
down to my once trusting feet?
The storm looked exceedingly bleak
‘til your strong, mighty hand
reached out to meet
mine, trembling and weak.
Then my failing faith
got a much needed tweak
by your loving guidance
always tender and sweet.”
Jesus nodded and sighed deeply,
“Now, let me speak.
This very night,
once again, you’ll repeat
that same breach of faith.
You will thrice fall asleep,
you will speak without thinking,
and bitter tears you will weep.
You will be sifted,
much as the harvested wheat
and I, I will go
with nary a peep.
But I will return and
once again we will greet,
and we’ll laugh and we’ll eat.
Then I will go to be with my Father,
but I will send one who will keep
you strong in your spirit
at those points you feel weak.
You will drink of my cup
and eat of my meat.
You will obey my command--
you will feed my sheep.”
“Thank you, Lord,” Peter’s face fell
as humbly he squeaked,
“Now, please, my dear Master--
will you wash my feet?”

I liked this poem because of the way it was written as a dialogue between Jesus and Peter.
Very clever use of Scripturein this piece!
