I sit in the park looking at the picture. The glossy postcard of Time’s square has rows of Christmas trees dressed in light, at the center sit six shepherds frozen in fright while angels, rope suspended, sing in silence with all their might. Clustered round these statues, an all boys choir strains red faced at ‘The first Noel’, Japanese tourists click away Nikon's at plastic sheep and one of the wise men remains bowed as a little dog wrestles his Myrrh. I lean back on the park bench, eyes closed, to time travel on this postcard to the white snow freezing of Christmas.
But all around me is Africa; trees weep brown leaves of this year’s dry season. A dust haze hangs on distant buildings like a brown stain in the sky. Farmers scorch and renew the earth with brush fires sending brown smoke heavenwards. A distant group of children in the park rehearse a carol singing innocently “I’m thinking of a white Christmas...”
I walk away slowly, dropping the postcard in the trash.
White or brown, the Savior was born, a kingdom to save, a people to redeem.
The children are in another song “…Oh fall on your knees…for this is heavens rejoicing…”
