I remember being at my neighbor’s house when there was a knock on the door. It was my grandfather coming to pick me up. Today is a special day; my mom went to the hospital this morning to have a baby. I asked him if I had a new brother or sister yet and he told me it was a girl. I was kind of hoping for a little brother, but a sister would be fine I guess. I’m the big brother now and it was going to be up to me to watch over them.
My grandfather told me that we were going to go and get some ice cream. I wanted to go see my new little sister, but my grandfather insisted that we have ice cream first. I really did want to see my new sister, but ice cream is good to. I’m only four and no matter what, ice cream is always at the top of the list.
Now we’re sitting down waiting for one of the three Dobie Gillis look a likes to wait on us when my grandfather starts to cry. He tells me that this morning there were some complications and that my mom lost the baby. Compli what? What do you mean she lost my sister? Again I’m only four and I’m thinking what are we doing sitting here; we have to get to the hospital and help find her. Besides she’s only a baby, how far could she go?
Just then Mary Poppins comes over to take our order. She is totally oblivious to the seriousness of our conversation and is determined to push Neapolitan on me because it’s a three for one deal and four year olds love variety. Grabbing my grandfather by the hand, I look up at Mary and tell to put her pad away and that her and her ice cream tie-dyed apron can move on to the next booth, we’re leaving.
As we are driving to go see my mom and dad my grandfather explains the whole thing to me and I finally realize that I won’t be able to hold my little sister today. That in a seven minute period God gave and took her away. That’s ok though, my grandpa said that she was really really sick so even though I didn’t get to hold her, God is.
As we enter the lobby of the hospital my grandfather stops to talk to someone. As I’m waiting I see a room with some cool looking windows. I wonder over and go inside and I find myself in the hospital chapel. I sat in the first pew and exhaled a huge sigh. It was quit and comforting sitting there. I was memorized by all the stained glass and hypnotized by the flickering flames from the candles.
I remember praying and asking God if my little sister was ok and I felt a warm sensation come over me. Then I heard a voice and it said “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.” – Philippians 2:1-2 (NIV) Then I heard the voice say that everything was going to be ok and I answered “k”.
