Grandma whispered, “Mary.”
Mary turned to her with her finger held to her pink lips and said, “shhh.” She placed her baby on the couch and tucked the red and green quilt around her. “Now, you take a nap. I’m going to go make Christmas cookies with Grandma.”
“Are you ready? I think your baby is asleep.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Mary and Grandma went into the kitchen. Mary climbed onto the stool at the counter, “I’m ready, Grandma. What do we do first?”
“The first step is to make the dough. But, I did that before you got here.” Grandma placed a bowl in front of Mary. “Okay, Mary put some flour on your hands. Then take a small piece of dough from the bowl and knead it in your hands.”
“Like this, grandma?” she asked, while squeezing the dough in her tiny hands.
“Yes dear, you are doing great. Flatten the dough on the wax paper and pick out one of the cookie cutters you would like to use. I will help you after I turn the oven on.”
Mary picked up the candy cane cutter and looked over her shoulder to make sure Grandma wasn’t watching. She thought, “I can do this myself.” So, Mary carefully placed the cutter on top of the dough and pressed down. When the cutter came out of the dough, the candy cane broke in half. Mary hurriedly placed a paper towel over it. She didn’t want Grandma to know she messed it up because she hadn’t waited for instructions. Mary reached into the bowl and got another clump of dough and flattened it out on the wax paper.
“Mary, are you ready for me to show you how to cut the cookies out?”
“Yes, Grandma.”
Grandma showed Mary how to do it. Mary worked on cookies while Grandma cleaned up the kitchen.
“What is this?” Grandma asked, as she lifted the paper towel.
“It’s nothing.” Mary said trying to avoid the issue.
“Mary, why didn’t you finish this one?”
“I messed it up and thought you would be mad because I didn’t wait on you.”
“Oh, Mary, I’m not mad at you. I would’ve helped you if you’d asked. All you have to do is roll the dough back up and start over.”
They took the dough, kneaded it again, pressed it on the wax paper and cut out a perfect candy cane cookie.

We are just like Mary. We mess our lives up when we don’t wait on the Lord. Then, we try to hide it from Him. When all we have to do is go to God and ask for His forgiveness. He will take us, like the dough, and remold us, so we can start living for Him again. If we trust in Him, one day we will be perfect, just like the candy cane cookie.
