Mom points to her watch
Musn’t be late
Hurry into the car
It continues in the parking lot
Mom’s two fingers lift
Both ends of her mouth
Big smiles all around
Mom’s snapping finger
Has everyone lining up
Hair good, clothes straightened
Bible in hand
As we step into church,
Someone asks how are you today?
The smile is brighter
And a little nod says just fine
One more cue from Mom
A checkmark with her finger
Remember to check all those boxes
In the Sunday School attendance book
Prayer requests start Mom’s class
Pray that my friend will know Christ
Pray for my father’s health
Mom piously folds her hands in prayer
When class is over,
Mom pats Sister Jones on the back
To remind her that we care
And that we will pray for her ill father.
March into the sanctuary
Arrange everyone
Stairsteps in the row
Facing forward hands in lap
A new couple comes
Their son won’t set still
Heads shake
But someone offers crayons
Some brave soul offers a request
That we pray for her marriage
Pittying looks and hands hiding open mouths
Pass through the crowd
We finally can leave
We reach the car
A collective sigh of relief
The act is over
When we get home
The Bible’s go up on a shelf
The clothes get hung up
Waiting for next Sunday
Dad is off to his recliner
With his football
And his beer
Wonder what the church would think?
Mom is gossiping with her church friends
I wonder what went wrong at home
Can you believe she said that?
It looks like we know what the church thinks
Big sister is off to her room with music screaming
She texts her boyfriend
About meeting him at midnight
Wonder what the church would think?
Teenage brother escapes to his computer
And checks into websites
That his mom has no idea about
Wonder what the church would think?
Little sister climbs up in Dad’s lap
And shows him her Sunday School craft
Teacher says that Jesus Loves Us and we should live for Him
Wonder what Jesus would say?
I'm so thankful that we now go to a church where we can be real with people and have real accountability and we can be there for each other. When someone asks how are you, they really want to know.
