“I’m here for the food.” I would joke. And that was partly true. The people of my home group were all married and could cook. Not that being married and being able to cook are mutually exclusive, but they were used to using the oven and stoves and not just putting stuff into a microwave. So the food was a big draw. Some nights we had Mexican casserole with spiced chicken, vegetables, and chips with a side salad topped with spicy ranch dressing; another night we had chicken parmagiana bites with Italian vegetables smattered in butter. And of course, ice cream and cookies for dessert.
And the bible study, learning the words of life that I could apply to my own. See I didn’t get the manual in my upbringing. So as an adult, I had to get with the program. As a drunk teenager, and most of my adulthood, I was out and about looking for a place to belong. I finally landed in a church, sobered up and started putting the real spirit into my body and soul. To hear about sin, forgiveness, the truth setting me free, was spiritual food that a hungry soul needed for nourishment. My spiritual home was empty. The outside decorum looked acceptable, but inside, dead man’s bones.
I was also there for the fellowship and seeing the words of life played out in the drama of reality, not something you get on a television set. People who let me look into their lives and even though I was afraid of their looking into mine, because of my sordid past. I learned that underneath all the dross, we are all gold that just needed some shining up, so we could sparkle in a world of darkness.
“Wow, what a beautiful place.” I would always tell the hostess. The voyeur in me liked looking into other people’s lives and homes. I loved how some of the people decorated, with cranberry walls, wooden furniture, paintings of landscapes and pictures of family on the walls. Little girls’ rooms decorated like a rose garden or a little boys room decorated like in a navy theme complete with a dresser drawers with little anchors for the knobs.
