I was on my way to the manor of our master, the master of the light. He was always open for visits, but it was a rare thing to be summoned by him. Today was one of those rare occasions. As I walked along the narrow stone alley my footprints echoed loudly against the walls. The passage was tightly packed with the dead. The sound of my feet was the only sound; a sound they could not hear. Nor could they see the light, but they could see me. One bumped into me as it passed and began shouting. So much anger.
I approached the large manor anxious for the warmth and extra light, which was one of the greatest joys of being in his presence. I softly knocked at the door. With a loud drawn out creak it was opened. I stepped into the foyer and instantly felt the heat encompass my body. My master embraced me with open arms and a bright smile. He offered me a seat, directing me to the big red chair in which he usually sat. He poured me a cup of hot cocoa in a beautiful silver goblet and placed some cookies on a small plate. The cocoa was rich and sweet, making my taste buds dance with pleasure at each sip. I was almost lost to my delight when my thoughts suddenly wandered to the dead. The hot cocoa was a small simple thing which provoked many indescribable feelings, feelings the dead could not know. Very unexpectedly I felt my throat begin to swell. Before I could stop myself hot tears were pouring freely down my pale cheeks. My master watched me. His big gentle eyes, fierce and yet loving, gazed at me full of interest and sympathy.
“I can see now that you understand me.” He said warmly, holding both my hands within his. The warmth of his hands only reminded me further of the coldness the dead must constantly feel. He pulled me close to him in a full embrace. I knew his love and felt powerless to the wave of emotion it brought upon me. My breaths were deep, and heavy. I sucked it in powerfully, feeling the air inflate my lungs and then leaving me just as quickly. My heart was pumping loudly, vibrating my toes and pounding my head. This is what it means to be alive. Still, I was puzzled by his statement. As if to answer my silent question, my master led me to a great window overlooking the dark city.
“Look to those hills.” He pointed off to the distance where I could see a faint outline. “Beyond those hills the dead do not dwell. It is a place full of light and warmth and the things of life you cherish so much. Why do you think I do not have you living there?” he paused briefly, allowing me to ponder or to wonder. “Today you have come to know my heart.” he continued, “You know how I mourn for my dead. Though they are dead, there is still hope. You must go. You must show them the love I have shown you. Help them to see the light; show them how to breathe. Tell them that they are dead, and that they live in darkness. Bring them to me and I will give them a light orb. I will give them life.” He locked his eyes onto mine and softly whispered. His words echoed in my heart, “Now go.”
