Everyone’s Grief is Exceptional…So It Was With Christ

Even God’s son didn’t want to face the grief that awaited him. Jesus didn’t want to drink of the cup of suffering. No one does, but He did and we will.
Grief is real and Jesus understands, because He was there. When we are stricken with grief, and we will be, our cross will be too heavy for us to carry alone. Even Christ needed help carrying His. Just ask Him to help you pick it up and He will accompany you up the mountain of sadness.
Each of us will be affected with grief or unhappiness. We will suffer when we loose a loved one, experience sickness, or go through a divorce. We will look for help from friends and others and likely it will not be there. We will all ask God for a miracle when we are sad. Often we will not recognize His miracle because its obscure. We must pray that we know God’s presence, even in times like this when we do not understand His ways.
There will be tension between our faith and unanswered prayers as we scream at God for His perceived silence. We may have rage towards Him and He will understand and not expect us to bury our feelings just because we have buried a loved one. We may feel that God should have seen that we were faithful and we may feel that He should have shielded us from these earthly sufferings because of our faith.
However, if our faith is truly strong we will surrender to Him as we heal, because He is the only one that truly understands our situation. We can not predict the timetable for healing and it may take years. God wants us to know that it is alright to grieve. If we truly have faith our sadness and grief will teach us to be honest with God.
It is sometimes hard to believe that God sees all and knows all, especially when we are suffering pain that is so consuming, so unrelenting and numbing. When we think and scream that no one can compare their pain with my pain, we have forgotten that Jesus experienced a worse pain and the crucible of suffering in a forsaken, lonely, dark, and terrible place. Jesus can compare.
We can not always understand the why, but we must believe that sadness, suffering, and grief is not necessarily a punishment for a believer. Actually, God often allows us to see the plan for our lives through unpleasant and painful situations that we suffer.
The Bible does not promise the absence of sadness or grief…only the presence of God!
*Webster defines “sad” as: affected with or expressive of grief or unhappiness; mournful; gloomy; downcast; depressing; deplorable; giving occasion for regret or dismay; heavy; grave, difficult; troubled; emotional suffering; remorse.
Psalm 137:2 KJV “We hanged our harps upon the willows.”
