“Hold on Ecanus” Zuriel shouted. “Can’t we stop long enough to take a closer look at the Fathers creation?”
“There’s so much to be done and so little time Zuriel” Ecanus responded softly. However, when he looked back and saw Zuriel’s pleading eyes, he couldn’t resist.
“Ok, but just for minute” Ecanus said.
Zuriel couldn’t contain his joy. He shot straight up, escaping earths atmosphere. He pretended to spike an invisible football, near a set of stars that were arranged like a goal post, did a little victory dance, and allowed himself to freefall back to his place beside Ecanus.
In Zuriels absence, Ecanus found the perfect place to sit and watch the Fathers creation. He perched himself atop the L in a popular chain store sign, where hundreds of people were coming and going. Zuriel found his place atop the M in the same sign.
“I just love our assignment” Zuriel gushed. “We are probably the most blessed children of the Father”.
“I think you might be right” Ecanus responded. “We are so privileged to record the deeds of who the Father calls “The Unsung Hero”. “I’m not sure why they are referred to as “Unsung” however, because we are consistently singing of their deeds to the Father”.
“I think the Father calls them “Unsung” because their deeds of kindness, goodness and mercy seem to go unnoticed by those they exist with” Zuriel said sadly.
Even while they sat, supposedly taking a break, their eyes continuously moved to and fro, like two powerful eagles searching for their next catch. Their strong hands never stopped writing on grayish tablets, in which name after name and deed after deed was being recorded.
“Hey” Zuriel suddenly shouted. “Tell me the story of one of your favorite unsung heroes”.
Without hesitation, Ecanus said, “Well, my most recent favorite would have to be Grandma Nellie”. “She ate practically nothing but beans for four years while she scraped enough money together to put her grandson through medical school”. “She not only ate meagerly, but she also went out early and stayed late gathering aluminum cans along a very busy stretch of roadway near her home”. “With the money she earned from selling the cans, she was able to make a huge dent in her grandson’s college tuition”.
“Your right” Zuriel said. “I remember Nellie well”. “The Father gave us permission to keep her pantry full of canned beans for those four years and gave us permission to scatter hundreds of aluminum cans in one specific spot, so that she wouldn’t have to walk so far.”
“It was a shame that her grandson barely said ‘thanks’ after graduation”. Zuriel added. “I guess golf, prestige and possessions were more important than his grandmother”.
“The Father took care of recognizing her though” Ecanus said with a smile. “On the day that she stepped into her permanent home, the Father had us throw a special party for her”. “All of heaven rejoiced at her homecoming”.
“Ok, now it’s my turn” Zuriel eagerly shouted.
“Your turn will have to wait for another time” Ecanus said quietly. “While we have been sitting here recounting the stories of unsung heroes past, there are fantastic deeds of unsung heroes going on all around us.” “It’s time to get back to work”. “Anyway, your favorite hero is always the next one on the list”.
In an instant the two angelic servants were launched back into their assignment. Their stealthy movements made them seem like small gusts of fragrant wind to the Fathers earthly creation. Their movements went virtually unnoticed except by a few.
“Hey” Zuriel said as he came to a screeching halt. “Didn’t that little one just give half his lunch to a hungry friend?”
“I believe your right” Ecanus said with a smile.
“I think I just found my favorite” Zuriel said.
