I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13) KJV
John Martin awoke with a start as the shrill ring of the telephone echoed along the tiny walls of his two room apartment. Who could it be this time of morning? he thought, before lifting the receiver up to his ear.
“Hello?” he said sleepily, while fumbling for the lamp on the night table.
The female voice on the other line sounded quite irritated. “Dr. Martin, I am so sorry to call like this, but Jayne Stevens is here in the ER and is begging for you. I explained to her that you are off and Dr. Layton is on call. She started screaming and throwing things at us.”
John tried to disguise the chuckle in his voice as replied, “Tell Jayne I am on my way.”
Hanging up the phone, John shook his head as he dressed in a pair of brown slacks and white oxford shirt, along with running shoes. It was not the suitable attire for his position, but he was needed in a hurry.
Jayne Stevens was a unique and wonderful lady whom had been just, three months ago, diagnosed with cancer. The news seemed devastated her. John had been with Jayne during each chemo treatment. There was only one difference. John was a Christian and Jayne was not.
Together they had often spoken about God. John never forced his beliefs on her, yet he always obliged in answering questions she would ask.
Stepping through the automatic doors of the hospital, John smiled as he approached Lisa Montgomery, who was the head nurse on nights for the Emergency Room.
“Dr. Martin, she is not letting anyone near her,” Lisa said as she handed him Jayne’s chart.
“She is scared Lisa. Jayne is 76 years old and has endured so much these past few months and knows the chemo isn’t working,” he replied before walking off, leaving Lisa standing there.
John knocked before speaking softly through the partially opened door. “Jayne, its Dr. Martin.” Stepping inside the room, he shut the door firmly behind him. He made every effort to listen to his patients, know their concerns and be truly honest with them.
Jayne looked up with a tear streaked face as her doctor entered. “Dr. Martin” she began then lowered her head as more tears trickled down her pale cheeks. She was sick, more now than when the first treatments started.
John placed her chart on the counter before going to her bedside. Lifting her fragile hand within his, he stood there in silence until she was able to compose herself.
God used many different circumstances to reveal his purpose to his children. John felt in his heart that he was working in Jayne’s life.
Jayne lifted her head up as Dr. Martin took her hand and smiled through more tears. “I am tired Dr. Martin, my life has been good, except that feeling of being incomplete. All these years I strived to find something to fill that void and couldn’t until I met you. You told me of your God. How he gave his only son to die on the cross for people like me.”
John’s heart soared at hearing Jayne’s words. “Did you finally find what you needed to fill this void?” he asked, giving her hand a gentle squeeze.
“Oh yes, Dr. Martin, I did. I found Jesus. I prayed last night and told him how ashamed I was to have run away from him for so long. I asked him to come into my heart and forgive me of my sins.” Jayne’s face brightened then she went on to say, “I am not afraid of dying any more. And because of you taking the time to share with me Gods love, I shared it with my daughter last week.”
“Jayne, I am so proud of you. I rejoice in your newfound life with God. I have prayed for you and your family along this journey to find peace and comfort.”
“Having Jesus in my life has given me a new outlook on life. You took a chance to tell me about God and in that saved me; thank you will never be enough,” she said, then leaned over and hugged him.
John left the hospital that morning happy that another soul had come to accept Jesus. He was but an instrument used by God the great Physician.
