Work Boot: Boy, am I looking forward to Sunday.
Sandal What’s happening on Sunday.
Work Boot Nothing. That’s what I’m looking forward to. All week I’m trooping around in clay, mud, slush, whatever there is, but on Sunday, Rest, beautiful rest.
Sneaker Lucky you. That’s the day I get to work hardest. On weekdays I do a two hour workout at the gym, but on Sunday I get to go bushwalking. Boy, that’s rough. Sticks, stones, puddles, creeks, mountains, balls, snakes, you name it I climb over it, kick it, stomp on it,. Wears me out it does. You know we only have a short life span, we sneakers. Our owners are workaholics. They never give us a day off.
Stilettos Oh, I should give you some of my days off. We are such a large group in our mistress’s dressing room. Every day we lay bets on which one will go out today. Most of us are black, you know, because they work in offices. The coloured ones only go out rarely, but when they do they have to dance all night. It takes them a week to get over it. Those shiny black numbers tread all over us. That hurts you know. I get paranoioa when I see them coming. If I could run away I would, but I’m too well stuck on my mistress’ feet. If only I could scream. I’d really yell the place down.
Sneaker You’re real lucky you only work rarely. I could sort of put up with that if I were going to have the next month off.
Stilettos Don’t suppose we could exchange owners, could we. It’s not the work I mind. It’s getting stomped on by the bullies. Abusive, I call it. There should be a law against it. Maybe we shoes should all get together and lobby our family for better conditions!
Pump Well, Sorreeee! I don’t mean to step on you. If I had a set of brakes I could stop it maybe, but my owner calls the tune. I just cover his feet.
I only work on Friday and Saturday nights, but you’re right, we work very hard those nights on very slippery floors, but I’ll try hard not to step on stilettos anymore.
Slipper Miseryguts. How would you like to be me and get stuck in front of the fire every night without fail, and feel your soles roasting. Huh! You think you have problems!
Sneaker Hey, Sandal, you’re pretty quiet. What have you got to say about all this? You’re never here anyway. I guess that means you’re working more than all of us.
Sandal All day, every day. And yes I cop the mud and dust, but every day I get freshened up and cleaned, which is wonderful, and helps me continue to work. I’m protected from being trodden on, fires, and some of those things, but occasionally my master stubs his toe and bends my sole right over backwards!
Others in Chorus Oh! Oh! That’s too awful. How do you cope with that. I wouldn’t put up with that! Go on strike! Stop work! You must want to leave home. That’s unbearable. That’s the limit
Sandal Oh, no! My master anoints my sole with oil of love every day, and every day it grows stronger! We go everywhere. He heals illnesses, teaches love, demolishes demonic fortresses – you should see those ghastly creatures slinking away to the dry and waterless places. All I can think of is the joy on the faces of the second-hand shoes He buys, when they see their life is about to change! The anointing keeps me supple and the joy keeps me strong. I can’t get enough of it actually.
Stiletto Oh, that’s a bit insipid isn’t it? I like my music, even if I do get trodden on.
Sandal Master’s “Consideration Beat” would have you grooving at twice the pace, without getting trodden on!
Boot I like my rest on Sundays
Sandal How about rest while you’re working?
Slipper Would the anointing heal my burns?
Sandal You bet it would.
Sneaker I’m a top brand sneaker. Sandals are not cool.
Sandal But they never wear out and get thrown away!
Pump My soles are worn right through from dancing so much. I actually need re-soling. I don’t suppose Master would buy me?
Sandal He already paid. All you have to do is ask.
