When we say this to the Lord, do we fully understand it's meaning? Do we than pick and choose the things he would have us do? Willingness to obey God is a choice, but that doesn't mean you can choose the things he would have you do. A friend of mine once said if it feels uncomfortable you must be in God's will. Now, I don't always agree with that statement, but I have found myself being uncomfortable many a times while in the middle of what I knew God wanted me to do. The trick to getting through those times is to never lose sight of God's will, or to turn your willingness into bitterness or resentment. Willingness should be given freely with a joyous attitude, even when we are taken out of our comfort zone.
Two years ago, God laid it on my heart to move my mother in with us. I was delighted and fully committed to doing God's will. I had no idea the struggles that lay ahead. I figured if I was doing God's will and I had a willingness of heart, joyfully I might add, than it would be a breeze. Oh, how wrong and naïve I was, there is no such thing as easy. Now, I could let resentment creep in and destroy my life, or I could make the most of this and learn the things God is trying to teach me. I try to have the willingness and the right frame of mind daily. I remind myself that I made the right choice, and for right now this is where God needs me to be. So I lay my own human resentment at his feet and he gives me strength to endure. I then take on the cloak of joyful obedience and trudge forward. Constantly giving it up to God and not letting the enemy steal my joy.
When we say to God, "Yes, Lord, I am willing to do your will." Be ready, because that's what willingness is. You are agreeing and making a choice for God. Willingness is like a contract; once you put it out there you shouldn't try to get out of it. I know this might sound a bit negative, but living a life for God is serious business. It is not something we should take lightly, nor is it something we can do when we feel like it. If you have a willing heart, to leave everything and follow Jesus, then when the race is done your willingness will defiantly be rewarded.
