These words spoken at any Lindsey family gathering, brings smiles to the faces of those present. No other words are needed. The memories are bittersweet. Granny touched all of our lives. Her strong faith in God was evident in all that she did. It somehow seemed unfair that Alzheimer’s had taken over her mind. We all watched as the person we loved so dearly began to disappear.
“Hon, can I help you?”
Countless numbers of projects were spurred on by these words. Reports were written, crafts were perfected, and meals were prepared, all under her careful influence. Even the hardest tasks became simple. With her help, nothing seemed impossible.
“Hon, can I help you?”
As her mind grew dim these were the only words she seemed to remember. She forgot the time, the days, and sometimes even our names, but she never lost sight of her desire to help. Of course, there was nothing she could do, but she continued to ask.
“Hon, can I help you?”
As the disease took control of her mind and body, these words began to test our patience. The same words that once brought comfort, now grated on our nerves. We fought back the urge to snap at her.
“Hon, can I help you?”
“No, Granny. There is nothing you can do.”
If only we could make her understand.
“Hon, can I help you?”
“Please God, remove those words from her memory.”
“Hon, can I help you?”
Those words stayed with her until the day she died. Although she was deeply missed, her death was a blessing. She finally conquered the disease that racked her brain. We stood around at her funeral, knowing we would never hear those words again.
“Hon, can I help you?”
A smile comes to my face as I hear the words fall from my own lips. What a wonderful legacy my grandmother passed on to us all.
