The place seemed calm but in their hearts, I could sense that there was so much chaos. They could not understand why they had to be in bondage neither could they find a way out. It wasn’t bad for them every day, but it was terrible most days, on a few occasions the slave master allowed them go along with what they desired and that brought them so much pleasure but the consequences of their actions came right back to hit them in the head. Before long, they began to wonder if he really meant well when he lured them into fulfilling their hearts’ desires.
The slave master puts them to work in a mine called sin and all they had to do was to fuel it and keep it running as they went about doing the things that pleased him. I saw the sadness in their eyes and the hope for someone to set them free. And that hope kept them going until a man came along, He called Himself the Saviour and it was rightly so because He came to the slave master and bought them off. Because they worked in the mine called sin, everyone called them sinners but then the Saviour changed their name. He called them saved. He sent them off to a new place and put them to work in a field called godliness but it was fueled by another Master called HolySpirit and all they had to do was to allow Him to run the field through them. They enjoyed the fruits from the field, they were free and loved.
But to my surprise, I watched as the slave master came around and lured them back to the mine. This made very little sense to me. I wondered why they would even pay attention to him after everything he had put them through. But they followed him back because he once again offered suggestions and rewards which appealed to their desires. I didn’t think they lacked anything at the Saviour’s place but certainly, they wanted so much more. All these people wanted was freedom and claimed to hate the slave master but they kept going back to him.
Because they didn’t have to stay with him forever, but always had someone to bail them out when things got bad, they thought they were free. But they weren’t, they were in bondage though in freedom. It amazed me the power they attributed to suggestions offered by the slave master who could no longer impose because power had switched hands and he knew who they belonged to. I was baffled by this behaviour.
I wondered if they really wanted to be free. If they understood what it meant to be free or what freedom really meant. If they knew how much it cost their saviour to set them free. I wondered if they only wanted to be set free or stay free. As I watched them go back and forth, I knew I was much like them and that made me uncomfortable.
I guess they forgot that staying free came with a fight, the battle never really ends until the end. But the battle is not fought alone but with the HolySpirit. Only if I could remind them that they were on the side of victory. The slave master always wanted them back but it was their duty to make it continuously clear that they belonged to another. I wish I could let them know that its more about staying free than being set free. And also inform them that freedom was all-inclusive. They were free from the attacks of the enemy, they had the power to say no to him backed by their Saviour, they also had the victory of sin and power to live a godly life.
Maybe what I should really do, is to sit myself down and tell myself all these things because I needed to hear them too.
