George had been groomed to run the family business and fortune. He had been introduced to numerous socially prominent, but extremely superficial human women, but they all left him feeling that they were more interested in money and status than him as a person. And to make matters worse, in George's parents minds, he had found God. Actually he had accepted Jesus as his Lord, and while a vague acceptance of Deity was accepted in his social circles, no one actually believed in a specific faith. Added to that, marrying a non-human made George feel fortunate that his parents let him on planet at all. They had enough pull with planetary officials to keep him from getting landing permission.
As Gracie was oceanic by biology and needed to be near seawater to survive most effectively, his parents, who lived on the North American district island of New York, and were glad to not be regularly reminded of their Orcan daughter-in-law, bought them an island in the off shore region of the old nation of Australia. It had a private lagoon where Gracie could swim uninhibited daily. She actually looked like an extinct killer whale when she was in the water, with ebon skin, except on her torso and lower face, which was Caucasian, pale as George's skin. Also she kept other predators at bay by augmenting her diet of Terran foods with local wildlife, like sharks and crocodiles.
It was December second when she messaged her husband to get her doctor as she was going into labor. No standard OB/GYN for George's wife... their child had to be conceived in a laboratory as Terran and Orcan biology were not completely compatible. So the doctors who created their baby had to be there for the birth just in case.

The next day at about noon, the baby was active on her own and swimming around a small pool they had brought to the hospital. She had nursed and eaten several small animals already. Except for a residual snout and her full jaw of carnivore's teeth, she looked practically human. Gracie had not settled on a name for their daughter with George. Her skin had no black and her fins were still not grown out of her skin. A nurse came in who had not seen the baby yet and said, "There's little Ariel."
Gracie grunted out, "Ariel?"
The young Terran looked at the fearsome looking mother on the bed and squeaked out, "Sorry, just a name from an old Earth story about a mermaid."
George decided he liked it. "Is it a bad name, dearest?"
Gracie's skin wrinkled around her snout and eyes as she clicked out, "It is musical enough for my family. Will it make her more acceptable to your family?"
George lowered his comm unit and said, "Already had a message ready with a picture, and said her name may be Ariel. Dad ignored me, but Mom commed me back." Holding his comm screen where Gracie could see it, he replayed the response from his mother.
"She's beautiful! Not sure that picking her name quickly matters, as long as she knows her grandma. I am boarding a transport in an hour to visit my granddaughter. I have a hotel room already set up, so I won't be a burden on you three."
Gracie growled, "Our mixed mating is worthy to visit now that she has a grandchild."
