“Everyone loves Busha, and Busha loves everyone,” my mother used to say. Busha was my great grandmother. She was born in Krakow in and her parents were jewelers. She married and came to the U.S. and they bought a farm in Wisconsin. Soon after her husband “bought the farm,” or died, leaving her with six young children. Although young, inexperienced and short in stature she had to run the farm herself.
She died when I was a toddler, but the pictures I have left show her always smiling, almost mischievously, like she knew a secret.
My mother said she would grab a chicken by the head, wring its neck, sit down and pluck it, and soon have it in the pot for dinner. It was as if it were one smooth flowing dance from field to table.
Two things she did not like, my mother said she always had a picture of the president up, but did not like any president that passed any bill against the farmer. Then one of her son’s got her a Brahma bull for a joke, which was most uncooperative and obstinate. Everything else, she loved.
One day she fell down and they took her to the hospital. The doctor said her heart just wore out. Just Wore Out. She loved completely and to the end, until her heart could physically love no more. She loved to the end. If there is anything to complete one’s life, it is to say it is finished, to love to the absolute end.
