A small grotesque shape appears outside the home like a creature who appears upon its prey suddenly, unexpectedly and starving. It passes through walls, quivering with evil anxiety. Predatory moves, slow, watching, waiting for the right moment, looking for the right person. The guards were gone. The demon could hardly believe the luck. The scant minion was suspicious, moving cautiously, yet unable to resist getting close to the girl. He knows she is protected by the ancient and highest ranking warriors. He knows he is on deadly ground, he can smell the stink of prayers, yet he cannot resist.
Passing into the master bedroom of the house, no time is wasted on the adults. It's the girl who prays, it's the girl who has such heavy protection … surely she must be a prize, something to get hooks into.
Outside her door, the anticipation is more than the demon can handle, it slithers low expecting an ambush from the guardian and the band of warriors always seen about her. Tonight she sleeps, helpless and alone. Wicked and angry with excitement, jealousy itself manifests itself over her, drooling and greedy by this apparent catch. Black liquid eyes, dark pools of hatred and regret glitter in the dark blue light of the bedroom.
The girl's eyes open and dread steals her scream.
Into the night and down the road, her guardian waits for orders. Every instinct is to slash the malicious spirit, the blasted rebel. Send it into the abyss where it belongs! Traitor of all things good! Azariah does not understand his orders. However, he trusts his Commander. More importantly, he trusts and serves The Creator. The girl would have to bear this on her own. “Be brave,” Azariah whispers. He waits with a band of angels, disguising themselves, undercover, giving the degenerates and depraved principalities a false sense of security. The orders were to give free reign until she sees one. “But,” his commander said, “Let no harm come to her, the second she understands, you are to cast it out forever.”
"It will be my honor," Azariah says. Her guardian's God given glory glows like the sun as he blazes into the night and to his post.
She opens her eyes and tries to scream but no sound comes out. The hammering of her heart and the terror in her eyes arouses the demon, she tries to thrash but cannot move. A helpless victim, or so it seems. It comes closer to her, breathing her in as much as he can. “I want you. I want you. I want you,” the demon hisses jealously, his black eyes looking deep into hers, his breath covering her face, filling her mouth, touching her. In an instant, the demon screams out in pain and the sucking sound of his last hiss falls into nothingness. The band of warriors circle the house just as Azariah discards of the rebel instigator. The girl screams, still in terror. She cannot see her appointed warriors. She cannot get out of the bedroom. The door is closed and adrenaline flows steady through her. She rips the door off of its top hinges trying to get out.
“Honey, it was just a bad dream,” her father tries to reassure her weeks later. She decides to let him think that. He does not really want to know the depths and mysteries that humans are not allowed to see. She will pray for him. She understands even better now, the battle is real and she must be on the right side.
