Now I am in my twilight years just waiting for the Lord to take me home. I am an avid pickleball player. My wife Kaye of 54 years and I spend our winters in Arizona, we are “snow birders”.
I was born in Chicago, Ill. And raised the first twelve years by my maternal grandmother who came from Italy. We lived on the South Side going to Catholic School and living in an Italian neighborhood. My brother was born five years after me and we received special care from a loving grandmother.
A nun at the school took interest in me and showed me the love of God.
My parents moved to San Diego, Ca. when I was entering High School. I learned the game of tennis in a gym class and the coach thought I should play on the team. I was short and skinny having skipped two grades in elementary school being young was a problem for me with girls etc. My father thought I should work so I bagged groceries after tennis and school.
I became a very good tennis player and was ranked nationally in the 18 and under group. Joined the USAF with permission from my parents, as I was only 17. Played tennis for the USAF team then was discharged honorably.
Played some college tennis then met my soon to be wife. Married five years and she thought I should become a Christian. She set her pastor (Southern Baptist) on me and soon I received Christ as my Savior.
Began working with youth soon after my salvation then became a Youth Director/Pastor for the next twelve years.
Received the call of the Lord to become a shepherd of His sheep so at the age of 37 we were off to Bible College and received a BS in Christian Ed. After graduation we decided the Lord wanted us in a rural ministry. We both were evangelistic and decided building churches were for us. During the next 20 years we grew four churches to more than triple the original size. Let me say here that we did this with the Lord’s help and give Him all the praise.
While ministering in our second church I received my MA in Theology and was ordained. I did forget to mention we have two sons, Ken and Steve. Ken was playing tennis in High School and his coach was retiring and asked the school board if I could replace him. My tennis background and having a Master’s degree helped get the position.
Retiring my youngest Steve and I formed a General Contracting business and for the next 12 years the Lord blessed us more abundantly than we ever thought possible.
We have two granddaughters Arial and Hannah and love them to death. Vacations, fun trips with them make our day. We are enjoying being grandparents.
The Lord has richly blessed us and has taken good care of us all these years. We are healthy and loving life. Never wanting to be idle I now take sermon notes and research to write. Who knows, the Lord may even do something with that.
