And the Lord said unto satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Job 1:8 KJV
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Job 38:1-3 KJV
Oh the arrogance of man, thinking he can choose God! The wonder of it all is that He chooses us. Individually, He approaches us and introduces Himself. He carefully chooses and orchestrates the situation. Like a young man enamored, He tenderly offers His love. Creator and King of the universe, with all power, He comes, bearing gifts, asking permission to court us.
And we, thinking this is an inconvenient time, put Him off. It may be that the world has more to offer! We seem to think He will always be there, waiting for us. No! We have the detailed record of Abraham’s relationship with this outrageous lover, as well as that of Moses, and of Job. We tend to think of them as outstanding examples of uniquely qualified servants of God. Hardly! The unique thing they had in common was the ability to recognize and accept an inconvenient offer of Love from an eccentric Being that required them to step out of their comfort zone. The requirement from them was that they believe and demonstrate their belief by doing some apparently risky and foolish things.
We don’t have a record of how many other men God may have approached before Abraham, asking them to leave their homeland and travel to a land He would show them. Think of Moses’ life. We know he was groomed for his destiny all his life, but He could have blown it, and almost did. But there came a specific day when God chose to introduce Himself and ask Moses to lead the slaves out of Egypt. We foolishly think we can decide when to enter into that relationship, but in reality that time is in God’s hands. It is whenever He chooses to reveal Himself to us. We can only respond when He calls us.
And when we respond to Him, we can know that He will continually reveal more of Himself in our lives as we mature in our love for Him. We do not choose these encounters…but they will occur. Our responsibility is to be ready to recognize and receive Him when He comes, until that last time, when He takes us home with Him. What a relationship, strictly on His terms! Remember our examples. All of us are potentially a Moses or Abraham or Job. Just recognize the moment of your opportunity, and do what He asks. Example implies a model for something that is needed in larger supply. And that something is obedient lovers of God who, in humility, do not seek their own but God’s glory. I have chosen these men as examples because their story is known; but all men are loved by God and He approaches them with the same offer: Come, walk with me, and I will bless you.
He does not promise riches or fame in this life, although they may come. But that relationship! It is worth everything. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. God walked with Adam in the garden in the evening. Would you be willing to be inconvenienced in return for a walk with God in the garden?
