Many times we come to Christ with the mistaken idea that Jesus will magically solve all our problems and life will be nothing but happiness from now on.
Sometimes it is because those who led us to salvation assured us life would be so much better. Usually life is much easier at the beginning, during the “honeymoon period”, as it’s often called.
Soon after, though, reality sets in. Some of our best friends mock this new passion we have for Jesus. Family members reject the sudden change and may even be fearful we have joined a cult that will swindle us out of all our money. Even co-workers treat us like we have a “holier than thou” attitude; underserving as it may be. Prayers aren’t answered the way we hoped and certainly not as soon as hoped. We know we are growing in the knowledge and grace of God, but why is life so hard? Where is that wonderful life people told us about?
The truth is the Christian life for most people is not an easy one. Just look at the examples of the apostles and all the things they had to endure. The Apostle Paul was in prison many times for preaching and teaching the Word of God. Read in 2 Cor. 1: 8 (KJV) how the pressure was so great he “despaired even of life”. And many of the other apostles were martyred for their faith.
Take time to read the psalms and hear the cries of those who were pleading with God to help them overcome the struggles they were going through. If these great men of God struggled in their Christian walk, should we expect any different?
So what should we expect during this Christian life?
1) We can expect the Lord to always be with us, helping us through ever trial we face.
2) We can expect to be victorious in every situation as we learn to trust the Lord.
1 John 5:4 & 2Cor. 2:14
3) We can expect our faith to continually grow to the point where we have a peace in the mist of trials, knowing we can trust God with the outcome. Rom. 8:28
4) We can expect to know the very heart of God as we become rooted and grounded in His love and the fullness of God. Eph. 3:17-19
5) We can expect Satan to fight us every step of the way to keep us from experiencing the great life God intended us to enjoy. 1 Pet. 5:8
I heard it said once that “it’s lonely at the top”. In other words, not many people have the stamina to go above and beyond what is average to reach the highest goal. One of the reasons so many marriages fail is because the commitment lasts until times get hard and rather than pressing in to understand and know our mate, we give up and look for a way that seems easier. Yet, only those who endure, experience that strong and lasting bond between husband and wife.
The Lord compares us to the bride of Christ. He knows us at the very heart of our being. Are we willing to get to know Him with that kind of intimacy? Are we willing to go beyond the honeymoon and into the marriage relationship with Christ? If we are determined to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and give our very lives to know Him, we will experience that peace and joy our heart desires. Life as a Christian may not always be easy, but it can always be rewarding as we surrender everything to Him.
