Ever since I was a young girl I’ve wanted to be pretty. My self-image was ruined by the fact that my fellow classmates in elementary school assumed I was a boy. My short “bowl-cropped” hair made it difficult to see which gender I was. For many years after others teased and taunted me for one reason or another. Although I developed close friendships, I never belonged to the “cool kids” club. My longing to be cool and pretty never stopped all throughout my elementary and middle school years.
When I became a teen-ager the girl I saw in the mirror was pretty enough to me. Long brown hair. Dark brown eyes. With an application of make-up I could pass for a pretty girl. The fact, however, that my beauty was never confirmed by others my age undermined my own thoughts. If no one else could see my beauty, then I must not be beautiful.
When I was a young adult I heard Jesus speak through another. The words fulfilled the longing I carried for years. Jesus thought of me as beautiful…a beautiful flower because He could see His own reflection in me. I belonged to the accepted crowd!
Now as a young mother of two children I barely have time to look in the mirror. When I do I’m still uncertain about what I see. My husband still has to remind me that He thinks I’m beautiful. There is one thing that I do know however. The beauty I want others to see is more than this body of flesh and bones that’s wasting away. I hope they see the glory of Jesus reflected in the brown eyes that look upon them. For only in Him can I be truly beautiful.
Only in darkness does one see the true beauty in the stars,
Only through trouble can Jesus shine glory in His clay jars.
