TITLE: GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN (series) | Previous Challenge Entry

Bernie scampered through the hollow log following his mother and sister Bernice. They were going to the meadow for the first time. Bernie had cleaned his teeth, using his rat-bone pick, and fluffing his black and white coat shiny and dust free.

Their walks became lessons helping to cope in the world. Bernie loved his teacher, mom. "Home school..hooray!" Bernie said aloud. Bernice started singing childishly off key,
"We're goin' to the Great Meadow,
Goin' to have lots of fun!
Sniffing fragrant flowers,
And play in the sunny sun!"

Bernie skipped over a broken limb, catching his first glimpse of the Great Meadow through the thicket. Eyes widened in awe, "Wow! This is incred..incred..incredible!" He said with anticipation, and a tad bit of anxiety. "Uhhhmmm..." momma sniffed, "Honeysuckle, my favorite fragrance."

The billowy blue sky spilled magnificently over the green meadow. Acres of purple clover, daffodils, and daisies dotted the landscape. Their heads up, nodding at the sun rising up over the mountains. Butterflies prancing, showing off their royal attire amongst the bees, who were much too busy to notice.

They had safely made their passage. Momma congregated with relatives saying, "You can run along and play..but don't stray far!" Bernice playing with cousins, looked at Bernie. Her head crowned with daisies and honeysuckle, "Bernie, I think it best we stay with our own kind."

"Silly girls," Bernie said, loping away. NO WAY he was plaiting flowers OR putting them in his hair-even if they had the greatest fragrance in the world!

"I'm checking out guys at the blackberry patch. Something interesting going on!" He sauntered over, "Hi fellas, whaz up?" There sat a porcupine humped over, bashfully hiding himself amongst the rabbits, a few squirrels, and raccoon.

"He's so ugly, he makes mud look good!" the risky raccoon exclaimed.
"Ugly, ugly go away, we won't play with you any day!!" bunnies chimed.

"Ya know guys, pretty is as pretty does, my momma says," Bernie stated, " and you guys could lighten up for friendship sake!"

All heads turned toward Bernie, his tail lifted. Spur, the porcupine, glad that someone else was the center of attention, disappeared behind a rock curious of the stranger helping. "YIKES!!!..Stinko is in town!" the boisterous raccoon started.

The squirrels chattered, "Where's the rest of the family? If one brother skunk moves in, the next thing ya know the neighborhoods full of em!" The rabbits lisped, laughing, "Hey, we can't tell you guys apart, you all smell alike to us." Mockery stemmed from their peers. "Stinky, Stinky go away, we won't play with you any day!!" Continuing to mimic the rhyme, between Spur being too ugly, and Bernie being too stinky without just cause.

Throughout the year, Spur and Bernie became close friends. They were the band of brothers. Bernie's momma had taught him to use his talent well, never useing it except in dangerous situations. Tia Kwon Poo, potent against all enemies. Spur had grown to be experienced, throwing spikes, piercing the target every time.

Spur spent so much time with Bernie, that momma schooled him too. Teaching them, "God had a plan and purpose in creation. All beautifully handcrafted and loved by God. Giving each of us helpful talents, special and unique."

Then the day came, that bobcat visited the Great Meadow, seeking a meaty dinner. A sneaky fellow, managing to pounce in the center of the same group teenagers. Who by the way, were up to their ears in deep shaconary.

Hearing the pandemonium near the blackberry patch, Bernie and Spur courageously ran to help as fast as their short legs carried them towards the squalor. The bobcat hissed, sweeping his paws at the helpless creatures he had surprised.

"Rear march!" yelled Bernie. They simultaneously marched in backwards.

"Ready!.. Aim!..Fire!" barked Spur. That bobcat got it with both barrels right between the eyes. His sharp claws displayed, were used for grabbing dirt. A quick escape!

Bernie and Spur were heroes from that day. The rabbits, the squirrel brothers, and the masked marauder danced, shouting, "Hooray!! Thank God for Blasting Bernie and Super Spur's rescue!" They never noticed the sour lingering fragrance, or the prickly coat of the porcupine they all hugged. They were happy to be alive telling the moral of this story. "Please don't judge a porcupine by it's cover! or A skunk by his colors."
