“No, I can’t stay for dinner. Alan and I are meeting our friends in an hour,” I said, as I was walking out the door from our traditional Friday afternoon girl’s get-together. “Luckily I am only 3 blocks from home,” I thought as I was backing out of the driveway. I put on my favorite song for the short ride home and was singing along, off-key of course. “I need a sign to let me know you’re here, calling on angels,” when the unthinkable and unplanned happened.
Suddenly I heard the groan of brakes followed closely by a loud sonic boom, and my vehicle was catapulted in the air. It ended as abruptly as it began with my car laid to rest sideways in a ditch. After the initial shock wore off, I suddenly realized that I was pinned in. I could not open my driver’s door to exit my crumpled car. My head throbbed and a large egg-shaped bump appeared on the left side above my eye. I felt the ooze of warm liquid running down my face. As I wiped it off my cheek, I realized it was blood. I desperately tried the door again, but to no avail; the ditch had me locked in. The console between the front seats, and the angle of my car in the ditch, made it impossible for me to climb out the back. I was beginning to panic when with a blink of an eye; I was in the back seat and could exit the car.
Holding my pounding head with an ice-filled towel from a neighbor, I stared blankly at what once was my car. It resembled a squashed can of soda you would see an 8-year-old boy kick around in the dirt, stomp on, and finally pound with the ball of his foot several times until it was at the desired flatness. Anticipating the arrival of the ambulance, my head and my heart throbbed in synchrony with many fleeting thoughts racing through my mind. “How did I survive that impact? How did I get to the back seat? Who is this new person that had emerged from the now indistinguishable car?” Somehow I knew that this collision was going to be a turning point in my journey, and my life as I knew it would never be the same.
The next day my cousin called, and told me she dreamt that an angel had unhooked my seat belt and carried me from the front to the back seat. As I listened to her describe the details, I immediately felt an inner peace penetrate my soul, singing out reassurance and confirmation. I smiled as tears streamed down my face, for I knew it was much more than just a dream.
After reflecting on the series of events that occurred, I realized that my life had been spared by divine intervention for a reason. Somehow I knew that God and His angels were with me that night and every night. I had my sign.
