Had I been dreaming? Maybe that was what had startled me awake, something in my dream. I closed my eyes and tried to remember. Images. Actions. Anything that could help me figure out why I felt so unsettled.
As I lay there, I heard a noise. A soft whisper. “Sammie.” Huh? What was that?
“Sammie,” it whispered again.
I didn’t move. I held my breath; I didn’t even dare to breathe.
“Sammie.”
“Yes?”
All was quiet. I lay there for a long while, but nothing else happened. Maybe I was dreaming, after all.
The next day, I told my best friend, Elisira, what had happened.
“Maybe you had one of those double dreams. You know, the kind of dream where you wake up and then you realize that you’re still in a dream, and then you really wake up.”
“That’s weird, Eli,” I groaned.
“It is weird. Haven’t you ever had that happen to you?”
“No. I don’t usually even remember my one-layer dreams.”
Eli closed her eyes for a moment. When she did that, I knew she was thinking intently. She took a deep breath. “Did you answer it?”
“No. I was too scared.”
“Well, tonight, if it happens again, answer it.”
“Answer it? Why?”
“Because you might be surprised at the response,” Eli smiled sagaciously.
That night, I had a hard time falling asleep. I was anxious. In a way, I wanted to hear the whisper again, and yet, I couldn’t bear to hear it. It really did frighten me. Eventually, I closed my eyes and my breathing became steady.
“Sammie.”
What a beautiful dream I was having. I felt as if I was floating.
“Sammie.” The whisper had returned. I wasn’t really dreaming.
“A…yeah…” I said tentatively.
“Sammie.”
“Yes? Who are you?”
“I’m God, Sammie. I want you to listen to Me.”
Now I understood why Eli had looked at me so astutely.
“Speak, Lord. I will listen.”
“Sammie, I want you to do something for Me.”
“Huh? You want me?”
“Yes, Sammie, I want you.”
“For what, Lord? I’m not exceedingly wise, like Elisira. I’m certainly not an eloquent speaker. I have no great abilities? Why could you want with me?”
“I want you to read My book?”
“Your book?”
“You know, the Bible.”
“Oh, Your Book.” I paused. “That’s all?”
“That’s all.”
“What’s the catch?”
“No catch. I just want you to read and fall in love with My Word.”
“That’s all.”
“Yes, Sammie, that’s all…for now.”
“Ah…I get it.” I smiled. “I’ll read your Word. Then I’ll wait for further instructions.”
I fell back into a deep, very restful sleep.
