My gears had been disengaged for, seemingly, an hour then. Though I sat in that torturous driver’s seat almost motionless, my life was in such a busy place I could hardly see through the sweat in my eyes, in my seat! I was dodging and swerving one way or the other, either from one threatening obstacle or another. Right there, my legs still knurled to the pedals, my tyres still on the road-legal hold, my life was in some place else, far from the near imagination even of Charity, who was in the passenger seat just next to me. I bet she was not at all aware of it, let alone for the excessive sweating that might have sold me out to anxiety, or poor skill on the wheels!
Early that morning we received news, bad news_ to me! The journey we had cancelled barely a week ago, had after all been effected. The ‘unwanted’ visitors had decided to travel all the same. I knew very well just how much was at stake. From the start I suggested we consider the visit an inconvenience, and an unwelcome effort at that moment, or any soon after. I was simply not prepared to meet them, all of them. I had not seen my in-laws for some time then. I each time suggested to Charity that the best time for me to make any such commitments would be soon after she would return from them herself. Out of sacrifice and loyalty, on most, if not all occasions, she would comply and visit them.
My reputation had been growing, and extending by the years. They had no reason to mistrust my exculpations, I made heavenly sure they had all they wanted, back there in the village. But when time rings an alarm, whether one hears it or not, it has gone off all the same. Both parents of my dear wife, Charity, had exhausted their treasures of patience. I do not at all blame them. Here they were, coming to see the godfather, too sophisticated to meet!
When Charity delivered the message, I was just tiding up for office. The previous day had been marked with contention and marred spirits. So this day was meant to pay back; possibly level one or two suspected mountains in the operation. So, before I actually noticed the served breakfast, my heart was already torn in irreconcilable two. I may, or may not have touched the first creations, fruits and so on, which were, as I saw, gazing at me with seriously inquisitive motives, from those equally resonating dishes.
When we drove out of the yard, I last heard Charity say: Don’t forget you have visitors! I must have responded to her immediately, by driving faster than usual with an uncomfortable acceleration. Sooner than I could ever have had the time to expect, we reached those three arch-lights! Oh! I just like woke up from some fatal slumber. How I least anticipated anything of its kind! My thoughts had been in dangerous driving speed from the start of the day. I had unwanted visitors to attend to_ by then we knew they were already at the terminus. There were a couple of unruly employees to deal with. A speeding troubled heart, a speeding troubled life, a speeding troubled world! Now a sudden stop, to a simple, all too simple RED robot light!
The ninety seconds I stopped there under the red light seemed to me a couple of thousand years. I was not prepared for that signal. My life was not in tune with that particular condition at that particular time. It was only imperative I could not respond correctly to the green light that followed. I missed my driving mood and ran into serious trouble.
In my failed countenance, I pondered on the RED day of the Second Coming of JESUS CHRIST, which will have to bring to a final stop, ALL THE SPEEDING TROUBLED INTENTIONS OF MEN!
