"But you said you couldn't get pregnant!" His voice, though not angry, was clearly concerned.
She shifted her weight uncertainly from one foot to another. She had been pregnant once before and lost the baby. Since then she had not been able to get pregnant, which is why her husband had divorced her. Six months later she met Jason.
He was stationed away from his family and she had just recently gotten the final divorce papers in the mail. They hadn't met for anything to happen, and certainly not to become involved with each other. But one thing had led to another.
Jason began to pace back and forth, wondering what he should do. The fact was, his marriage was emotionally dead. Macey had taken him by surprise. He hadn't ment to fall in love with her, but he had. He knew he had made a mistake leading her into the relationship. But it just all happened so quickly and naturally.
He stopped pacing and looked back at Macey.
"Oh, Macey. I really don't know what to do. I can't get a divorce." He paused for a moment. "But maybe..."
"No," Macey blurted out instantly.
Jason blinked turning his head to the side silently asking, "Why not?"
Tears rolled silently down Macey's cheeks.
"Jason," her voice trembled. "I know you have problems at home. I know things seem hopeless for you there. But the truth is, if you had never met me, you would have gone back home and worked things out with your wife."
She paused for a moment, trying to gain her thoughts. Jason could see the pain in her eyes, and began to realize that she was thinking of her husband and the failed relationship there.
"I can't understand why God wouldn't let me have a child with my own husband, and then, as soon as I step out of bounds, I get pregnant."
Jason moved closer to touch her arm, but she backed up a step.
"No," she whispered again, putting her hand up. "Some unknown woman walked into my husband’s life, gave him a child, and took his heart from me. I will not do that to another woman. I will not cause the same pain to someone else. Go home, Jason. Go home."
She looked into his eyes. She could see the concern he held for her. But she was determined. She did care for this man, but there was a woman on the other side waiting for him to come home. She had to do right. She had to be strong now.
"I will be o.k. God gave me this child. Only He knows why and why now. He will take care of us. He will be my child’s father. I haven't trusted God for so many years. Maybe this is just His way of calling me home." She paused again, "Calling us both home. Go home, Jason. Take care of your family."
As Macey turned to leave Jason grabbed her arm carefully.
"I appreciate what you are doing,” he said. “but…”
She shook her head slowly and at that turned and left the room.
Six months later she gave birth to her little girl and received a note from Jason.
It must be near time for you to have your baby. I just wanted you to know that my wife and I are expecting a little boy in two months.
It is amazing what a baby can do for you. You were right. God is doing something. I think He is giving us both the chance to have a new life by giving us both a new life to take care of, both physically and spiritually. Thank-you and God be with you."
Macey stared down at the letter as tears of joy came to her eyes. Yes, they had both made some bad decisions and mistakes, and from that mistake had come a child. But they both understood that this little baby was not a punishment, but a blessing. A new life from God. A ray of light and hope and the strength she would need to move ahead.
She laid the letter aside and carefully picked up her sleeping daughter.
"You are my new life. You are my blessing," she whispered into the tiny infant’s ear. "Thank-you God for your forgiveness. Please give me the grace and wisdom to teach her about life in You."
