I looked for my favourite T-shirt and most comfortable jeans. I couldn’t see them anywhere, so I headed to the kitchen.
“What’s for breakfast?” I surveyed the empty table.
“I thought you might enjoy buying your breakfast today.” Mom reached into her purse, found a lipstick and smeared some on her lips. “After all, it is a special day for you.”
“Oh, I thought I would have something here.”
“We’re out of bread and milk, so I guess you’ll have to buy your breakfast today, unless you want a cereal bar.” Mom checked her hair in the mirror by the door.
“Do you have any money for me to buy breakfast with?”
“Ah, actually, I don’t. Sorry.” Mom slipped on her jacket. “Like you said, you’re an adult now and can look after yourself.”
“Well, do you know where my blue and white T-shirt and my favourite jeans are?”
“They’re probably right where you left them.” Mom pulled her shoes out of the closet and put them on.
“Well, I put them in the laundry hamper two days ago. Did they get washed?”
“Not by me. Most adults wash their own clothing.” Mom grabbed her lunch off the counter and picked up her car keys. “Guess you’ll need a lesson on how to use the washer and dryer tonight. I hope you don’t have other plans.”
“Well, that’s not exactly what I had on my agenda for tonight.” I opened a cupboard and surveyed the contents. “Who’s driving me to school today?”
“I guess you’ll have to take the bus today. That’s what most adults do.” Mom picked up her purse and reached for the door. “I have to leave now as I have an early meeting today. I’ll see you after school.”
“But what bus am I supposed to take?”
“The phone number for the bus company is by the telephone.” Mom reached for the door handle. “I’m sure you can figure that out by yourself.”
“Wait, can I use the car tonight after I’m finished my laundry? I’d like to get together with a few of my friends.”
“Well, I barely have enough gas in the car to get me to work and back, so I guess if you have money to put gas in the car you can use it.” Mom checked her watch. “Can you start supper tonight? I might be little late as I need to go to the bank and pick up a few groceries on my way home.”
“Ah, what do you want me to cook?”
“Your choice, after all, it is your birthday. Just make something you know how to cook.” Mom checked her watch again. “I really have to leave. I’m running late. Bye.”
Now what was I supposed to do? No breakfast. No money. No clean clothes to wear. No ride to school. I wasn’t even sure where my house key was to lock the door when I left. This day was turning out to be the pits. All I could find to make for supper was macaroni and cheese or frozen pizza. I knew I’d be spending the evening washing my dirty laundry rather than hanging out with friends. Adulthood was nothing like I had expected. I thought I’d have a lot more freedom, more privileges. What I was actually getting was more responsibilities. I guess I’m going to have to get a job so I can afford some entertainment too.
