School had been out for about a month and normally summer was Tommy’s favorite season. It usually meant that he could get up early and head for his best friend’s house.
They’d go down to the creek and skip rocks or play with Goldie, Tommy’s big, golden retriever. Now that dog loved the water. But not this week, you see, Tommy’s friend was on vacation.
Tommy just sat on the hard, smooth concrete steps, watching a butterfly as it fluttered from flower to flower. The summer breeze was hot and sticky.
“No relief at all” Tommy thought.
“Mom, Oh mom, I’m bored, what can I do?” He yelled.
Tommy’s mom walked to the screen door from the kitchen. “Well, let’s see, how about cleaning up the yard.” She replied.
“Oh mom, that’s not any fun.”
“How about helping me in the kitchen?” She said with a smile.
“Naw, that’s woman’s work. I want to do a man’s work and something that’s fun to do.”
“Okay, I have a great idea, why don’t you and Goldie walk down to the creek and pick some blackberries and I’ll make you a cobbler with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream.” Mom replied
“Well, okay, I’ll do it, come on Goldie, we’re going to the creek.”
When he and Goldie got to the creek, Tommy couldn’t help himself, the water was too
inviting. Tommy loved playing in the creek with Goldie and summer time was the best time to do just that. The water was cold and clear, why you could even see the tiny pebbles at the bottom.
“Hey, girl, doesn’t that water look good? Listen, I think this creek is saying, “Come on in, come on in!”
Tommy sat down, pulled his shoes and socks off. Then he walked over to the water.
Goldie had run ahead of him and was already in the creek, barking at Tommy as if to join the creek in saying “come on in.” Tommy grinned and got a big handful of water and started splashing Goldie. He was getting pretty wet. He knew he would get into trouble for not asking permission to get in the creek. Well, it really wasn’t all that deep, so he looked around, nobody in sight. He slipped his jeans and tee shirt off and laid them in a pile. Then he jumped into the cold, clear water in just his underwear.
Boy, did he and Goldie have fun in the hot, summer sun. They were splashing around in the water, when all of a sudden Goldie ran out of the creek grabbed Tommy’s clothes in her mouth and took off running. Well, Tommy took off after Goldie, soaking wet with just his underwear on and yelling at the top of his lungs.
“Goldie, come back here with my clothes, Goldie!”
But Goldie just kept running, dragging Tommy’s clothes in her mouth till they made it home. Now Tommy’s mom was sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair, when she saw Goldie come running up and dropping Tommy’s clothes at her feet. She broke out laughing.
“Be sure your sins will find you out.” She said still laughing, as he stood dripping wet in his underwear. Tommy shook his head and broke out laughing too. Then Goldie came up to him and started licking his face, as if to say “I’m sorry”
Tommy got dried off and put his clothes on. He patted Goldie on the head.
“Well, girl, we really know how to spend a hot summer day, don’t we?”
“Woof, Woof!” Goldie replied.
They both walked back to the creek to get the blackberries for that cobbler.
“It turned out to be a pretty neat summer’s day after all.” Tommy thought
