She must have stood in that bathroom for 15 minutes, staring at the little blue and white stick on the counter-top. Pregnant. Pregnant? ‘Don’t panic,’ she thought to herself. ‘Maybe you took it wrong. Or maybe you’re reading it wrong...’ The funny thing is, she had made sure to buy a digital pregnancy test, to avoid this kind of confusion. In all reality, she knew she had, indeed, taken it right, and she was, indeed, reading it right. She just didn’t want to believe it. She was only 18. Was she ready for a baby? At 18? As hard as it would be to have a baby, that wasn’t what she worried about the most...
She knew she should have gotten away from Brian a long time ago, but she was scared. Brian wasn’t every girl’s dream. In fact, he was more like a nightmare. But, after a tragic occurrence a couple of years back, Anna was looking for protection. And that was what Brian gave her. Protection. At least, from everyone but him. However, regardless of how bad he was, here she was. Pregnant. She had made a mistake. There was no doubt about that. There was also no turning back. She only wondered, what next? She prayed for God to give her an answer...
As Anna looks back at the events that took place in her life upon finding out she was pregnant, she is sure that God works in mysterious ways. It’s amazing, the way even a young girl’s life can change, when she realizes it’s not just about her anymore. Lanie gave Anna the strength she needed to get out of the damaging relationship she was in. She had since met James, who, from the start, loved Lanie and accepted her as his own. He had always considered himself her father, but he wanted it to be made official.
The time had come. Anna and James were now walking into the courtroom where the judge sat, ready to give them an answer, based on whatever decision Lanie’s biological father had made. Would their dreams come true? Had Brian chosen to sign the consent for adoption, or would he be there to contest this decision? Anna held her breath as they made their way through the doors. “Here goes,” she whispered nervously to James.
Back at home that night, the time came to tuck Lanie into bed. Anna smiled as she stood watching James delicately cover Lanie with her favorite ‘blanklet’. “I love you, booger bear,” James whispered into Lanie’s ear. “I love you the mostess, Daddy.” Tonight, Lanie’s words took on a whole new meaning to James. Because, as of 10:41 this morning, that’s just what he was - her Daddy.
In bed that night, upon closing her prayer, Anna looked over at James, who was fast asleep. She felt overwhelmed by the love she had for the man lying next to her. The man who had not only loved her, but who had also filled a spot in her daughter’s life that she’d feared would always be empty. The man who proved that, while many men can be fathers, it takes special men to be daddies.
