There were three things I was supposed to see that I didn’t. I was informed by the deacon of our church before we began our trek that there would be cold drinks, lots of cold drinks. All I see is sand, lots of sand. I was told by the Pastor’s wife there would birds, I don’t see any birds. Joyce, from the choir, (who by the way was the one who talked me into this fiasco), had commented on how much fun it would be. “You‘ll see” she said, “it‘ll be fun.” I just can’t wait until I see Joyce. I‘ll set her straight.
There was four of us in our group, and we all had to pack our own equipment. My fellow voyagers must have done this before because they owned their gear, I had to rent mine, and I think they must only rent the real heavy stuff, I’m sure it weighed more than I do. (Sorry about that), do allow me one more little lie, or better, exaggeration. But I was overwhelmed, and felt that I’d never get through this grueling odyssey in one piece.
We were maybe an hour out when William, one of our four, quoted from the book of James, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.” His ball had found it’s way into one of those bodies of sand I referred to earlier, and he was using scripture not just for comfort, but for humor. It made me realize that I was taking my ordeal much to seriously. It was after all, a nice day. A breeze had picked up, and too hot had turned to temperate. Bob noticed a cold drink cart arriving on the horizon, our deacon as usual, had told the truth, there would be lots of cold drinks. Jeff had a bird on the second hole. No birdies for me, but I did chip in for a bogie on that same hole where William found himself in the sand trap. Jeff said that he thought I was a natural, and he could see a bird in my future, so maybe Pastor’s wife was just prophesizing.
By the time we reached the next green I had an ice cold fruit juice in my hand, the afternoon wasn’t as hot as when we started, and my bag of clubs seemed lighter. I could see Joyce over on a different fairway laughing, she was right, it was fun. She’s a very nice girl, has a good zest for life, carries a contagious smile, enjoys the word of God.
I like singing. I think I might join the choir.
