Everyone loves Christmas but for many different reasons. Many children may like it for Santa Claus and the surprise presents. For some people Christmas shopping is the best part of the holidays. A nice home cooked meal is my favorite part of Christmas. When you think about these things you can find one common thing among them. They all remind you of love.
Until 2005, I didn’t really care about Christmas. I was living in Korea and in Korea Christmas is not an important holiday to most people like it is in America. Christmas is a holiday for couples in Korea. On Christmas day there are multiple events for fresh, young couples. So you see Christmas is a big holiday for them. I was and still am a Christian so I celebrated the day but I did not visit cousins and exchange gifts like Americans do. I stayed home, watched TV, ate dinner with my family, went to church, sang Christmas carols, and enjoyed rest of my no-school day by relaxing in the house. However, not everyone in Korea spent their Christmas day the same as I did. There are many people that like to go out with their friends and do something unique to make the day a special memory. So if you were to actually see Korea on Christmas day, you would notice that the street and every place around it is so bright and lit up with many neon signs which flash ‘Open for 24hrs’. But I did not see a whole lot of people enjoying Christmas with their family. My first Christmas in America was very surprising. Every each single one of the stores was closed and streets were amazingly dark and quiet. Only houses had lights on and looked warm and welcoming. Then I realized. Our cultures may be different but we are still enjoying Christmas in our own ways. We are all spending time with the people we love whether that is family, a boyfriend, a girlfriend, or just a best friend. Because that is what Christmas is all about. Just feeling love from the people around you.
Now where is home for Christmas? I want to say wherever you are, as long as you are with someone you love and you consider yourself warm and happy – that is home. So my Christmas in Korea a few years ago sounded sad but was not at all actually. I was with my family whom I love the most. And come on, escaping from the jail called school and having nap time in the house? What can it be better than this! I was happy and that is all that matter. I love Christmas!
