“I am scared…” I shouted in my loudest pitch. “A devil! A black devil! I am scared!”
Yes, I was sure; I saw the black devil standing in front of me in his black dress! He was nodding his head calling me towards him. A heavy wind was blowing pushing me to him!
It was a dark evening as the sun had already gone to his resting place, earlier that day to frighten me more with a devil!
As usual we were playing hide and seek outside our house. Daddy and I. At the age of four, I always longed for that time to play with my daddy when he came home after his day’s work. Everyday, he would engage me in this ‘hide and seek’ game! My little brother Paul was too small to join us.
My daddy would ask me to count from one to ten, closing my eyes and standing in front of a wall. While I was counting the numbers he hurried to select a place to hide.
That unforgettable day it was my daddy’s turn to hide. He was hiding. I always liked him to hide rather than I hide and make him search for me. He hides in places where I cannot find him easily. It is an interesting thrill to search for him! When I catch him after my long efforts of searching, I burst into fits of laughter unable to control my seething joy!
But even while I search for him, I would wish him to be hiding far away. The farther he is hiding, the more thrilling the game would be! The louder my laughing could be!
Hearing my scream my daddy came running. He was sure something unusual had happened to his beloved child! He cannot withstand my cry!
I just closed my eyes tightly and waited for his warm embrace! I was sure of it within seconds! That thought itself filled me with the light of courage!
“What happened dear,” I felt my dad and heard his love.
“There daddy, look at that devil, there at the top of the tree.” I had all the courage now to show him the devil still nodding his head. I was in my daddy’s hands. Now I can even kill him!
Dad moved in the direction I showed him. Now I was filled with all the strength of a Roman Legion!
Piercing the darkened evening, my dad boldly went near the devil, hanging from a tree!
Suddenly he put his hand on the head of the devil!
“Oh nothing dear, just an old pot your mom once used for cooking!”
He gave it to me. I threw it with all my courage and broke the devil’s head into a thousand pieces!
An old mud pot my mom used years back. From the silhouetted background of the dark evening, the pot which my mom hanged on a broken branch of the tree frightened me with the devil’s appearance!
That night I was in bed with my dad, listening to a lot of things he told about the devil’s tricks to frighten little children like me.
I still remember his encouraging words to hold the hand of the Eternal Father who never forsakes us! He explained me how that Father likes to play ‘hide and seek’ with us, but forgets us! When he asked me assuring the words of His Eternal Love, I was filled with tears.
“Can a woman forget her sucking child that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have graven you on the palms of my hands…” (Isaiah 49: 15-16)
As I grew up, I read again and again those words of Isaiah in the Bible. I pondered over the words my daddy told about God’s wonderful ways and the warning he mentioned about the deceiver, the devil, who is also playing ‘hide and seek’ with us!
A few days before his death, my dad warned me. “And no wonder! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Cor.11:14).
My Eternal Dad, give me courage to stand with You, in Your ‘hide and seek play’ and don’t forget the promising words through Your Son, “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
