Being the middle of three boys was great. Then there was the three sisters that came along not too far behind. Then, as I was getting ready to leave home, there came another brother.
I liked being in the middle. We could all play together and it was fun. On some days, though, I would be on the outs with my older brother but that was OK, I could still play with my younger brother and have just as much fun. As our little sisters came along, it was sometimes easy to let them play with us so we all would have fun.
What I see as difficult is not being in a family of at least three siblings. I know for many parents these days having one or two children is all they want but I am here to say that it is not easy on the kids.
Here is my point in example. The youngest of our six children and his wife were not able to have any children so they adopted. They were able to adopt two young brothers ages four and five. They both had some health issues as well as emotional issues partly from having had to live in seven foster homes before being adopted. These two brothers are very much different in interests, talents, abilities as well as emotions. I can see this as my wife and I have them in our home about every other weekend. There are moments when these two brothers can play together well at the same activity but it isn’t long and there is a disagreement that can’t be settled in a peaceful manner. They have to be separated. For them, it would be well if there was a third or fourth sibling. Then there would be others in the family to still be able to play with.
So, when thinking of having a family, think of the kids. The middle kid always has it good as he can choose to play with the older sibling, the younger sibling or with both.
