And one I am most proud to claim.
You see, it was my grandmother’s name
And, then, she passed it on to me.
As a child, I often crawled onto her lap.
Grandma always rocked me and smiled.
As I chattered my childish dreams to her,
She talked with me about my life.
She seemed to enjoy our visits as much
As I enjoyed my times with her.
She was a grownup who listened to me.
I knew I was special to her.
The last time I saw her I was only eight
And I could not comprehend.
I jabbered about my new bright red shoes
And she smiled love from her sick bed.
Looking back over the years since that day,
Her memory is still very near.
Although I miss her accepting sweet smile,
Her kindness makes my mission clear.
I strive to be so much like her today.
When my own grandchild speaks to me,
I pause, listen, and smile attentively
Just like my grandma did for me.
