Psalm 145:8-9
The LORD is gracious and compassionate; slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
I have been an elementary English teacher for almost three years and I have lots of experiences in terms of dealing with the behavior of the students with 10 – 13 years of age and it was not an easy task to deal with them if you yourself is not ready and equipped with God’s words.
One of the problems of students who are slow learners is – they are afraid to answer when they are called for they are thinking that their answers might be wrong. They would rather turn their eyes away from you thinking that you will not notice them.
I would even ask myself how I would let them try first before looking at the possible endings if they will do or say the right thing or not. That’s the time I ask my colleagues and elders on what could be the proper way to deal with them.
A word of encouragement is the first one on the list. I asked them how I could do that. They said that before you will start asking them lots of question try to know them first. Let them do the talking – what are their likes and dislikes, their fears and source of happiness. It was hard because having 30 to 40 students of different family background and interests you would even try to give up. I didn’t have a unit of psychology though I’ve taken up basic Child Psychology. Still I felt that some things are not enough, something is missing but I tried to do it.
During my second year of teaching I’ve observed that mostly of the students doesn’t want to talk, they were aloof. Weeks and months passed and I found out that some of them were living with their relatives or “trusted persons” because their parents were working abroad, and some parents were busy with their work that they don’t have time to look at their child’s notes. There are times that even pastor’s kids are suffering from this kind of circumstances. So I asked myself how I could encourage them if they themselves are receiving it oftentimes.
As teacher, we are even having the hard time to make contacts with the parents that’s why I would rather ask for their cell phone numbers and office’ land line numbers and it did a miracle on my part. I have even learned to understand them. I’m still practicing that though there are still unexpected things along the way.
When you will learn the power of encouragement you will also learn how to listen attentively and understand them better. The students loved teachers who are “talking less and listening more” to what they say. Being a great mentor couldn’t be seen in us, our mirror and influence could be seen in them – our students. We should always tell them that being a young one is not a hindrance to try and make the best out of something; we should tell them that God is using people to help them face their shortcomings as a child. Teachers are used by God to encouraged students, to make them confident about themselves, to make them believe that we are their friends, that we are part of their family who will help them and not to break them. We should always be equipped with love and compassion that are always willing to give what God has given us.
