“No, mi hija, I’m not sad. I’m overjoyed with happiness?”
“Mommy, I don’t get it? How can you be happy and cry at the same time?”
“Mi hija, let me explain it to you, then you will know why I cried when I saw you playing with your new doll.”
“When I was little girl like you, we were very poor. Abuelita and Abuelito could not buy us new dolls or new toys, so we made our own toys out of our old pillows, pillow cases, and hair. On my way to school, Abuelita and I would have to pass by a garbage dump, but she would never let me go there. In one of the piles of garbage, I saw a doll. So, after a day or two, I asked my Abuelita if I could visit my friend. When she let me go visit my friend, I ran as fast as I could to the garbage dump, and I found the doll. She was dirty, smelly, and a little torn. I took her home, and I washed her, cleaned her, and fixed her the best I could. I would talk to her and tell her my deepest secrets. One secret that I told my doll was that I prayed to God that when I had a daughter that I would buy her a new doll, so that my daughter would not have to find old things or used things that other people threw away.”
“Oh! Mommy, Mommy is it Pualita, the doll you keep on your bed.”
“Yes, mi hija.”
“Now, many years later here in the United States, Mi hija, I went to the department store, and I found a doll that looks just like Paulita. So, I bought her and gave her to you, but you know what Paulita?”
“Yes, mommy”
“God showed me that a new doll or an old torn doll has no money value to child who loves her doll in any condition a child finds her doll. Paulita, a child’s new doll or old doll is the same when a child loves her doll. So, I learned that God loves me and you like I love Paulita and you love your new doll. God will make us better and fix us up, because he loves all his dolls, just the way we are, Paulita.”
“Yes, mommy, I love her because you found Paulita a sister to play with.”
“Mi hija, are you crying too”
“Yes, but it's because I am happy too”
